Good news this week on two fronts for conservative Talk radio in southern California.
(1) Roger Hedgecock picks up a prestigious Los Angeles station for his syndicated show, as KFWB am-980 now carries him live from 3 to 6 pm. Getting a top station in a new major media market is a break-through for the “Radio Mayor”.
(2) KFI drive time hosts John & Ken add a 5th hour to their must-listen program, now running 2 to 7 pm at am 640. Though LA-based, they have a large audience in San Diego, and their listeners throughout southern California have made them major players in State politics.
During the battle over tax-raising Prop. 1A this Spring, Governor Schwarzenegger famously asked, “Who is running this state, the Governor, or John & Ken?” When Prop. 1A lost 65% to 35% , John & Ken were given much of the credit/blame for the outcome.
John & Ken also added a northern California element this week when they started a simulcast on Oakland’s am-910.
With Rick Roberts at KFMB, am 760, and Mark Larson, Rick Amato and Gayle Falkenthal at KCBQ am-1170, news-based Talk Radio is looking up again !

Jim, thanks for the shout out to KCBQ’s team! KCBQ is devoted to live local talk by San Diegans and for San Diegans. While Roger and John & Ken have plenty to offer, neither show focuses on San Diego’s top issues.
As election season heats up, KCBQ will come on strong with plenty of debates featuring all the candidates and the issues. Rick Amato already hosted one barn burner of a Sheriff’s race debate in conjunction with East County Magazine, and it’s not even Halloween yet!
If having this kind of forum available day in and day out matters to you, PLEASE listen, tell a friend, and patronize the sponsors. Your actions make a huge difference.
Gayle:
I still Q in my Car ! Glad that your show is there and
that you and Rick Amato will carry the Torch of , “live and
local” candidate debates. Good news indeed.
Can I suggest a “Rostra” topic for you? Examples of the
wacky things that happen behind-the-scenes in Talk Radio.
You needn’t name the names… usually the situations
themselves are funny enough.
My fave from a brief stint as a radio producer… a certain
very Married elected official was to be the next guest
after an interview of a beautiful women celebrity. He
asked me off-air for her phone number, but I talked him
out of that idea! (He’s no longer in office by the way).
