Reporter Doug Curlee in Scoop San Diego…

Regardless of how the Bob Filner mess eventually ends—and it will end, somehow—there are questions that need to be asked and answered … questions that should have been asked long ago, and should have been asked by those whose job it is to ask such questions: us.

  2. Over the many years I have been doing media interviews, from time to time I mentioned (off camera, to avoid possible defamation problems) to a reporter (and camera person) that someone should investigate Bob Filner’s loutish treatment of women.

For years Filner’s aberrant behavior towards females has been common knowledge among many — perhaps most — people active in local San Diego politics. Many of us (myself included) can recount a first hand experience some woman has confided to us, with the understanding that they would not go public with this information.

Reporters understandably replied that they would love to do such a story, but first some woman/women must come forward. Confidentially I repeated this suggested story to a visiting KGTV-10 reporter the very morning that the three Democrat luminaries later demanded that Filner resign.

Looking back, the biggest problem was that no woman wanted to be first, and to then be subjected to partisan attacks and media scrutiny. It was an understandable reluctance. Fortunately Marco Gonzalez got three women together who were willing to come forward. That was the tipping point.

Once the first woman came out with her tribulations, I publicly predicted that at least 20 women would come forward to tell their Filner story. Now I’m beginning to think I was too conservative in my estimate.
