Ever wonder how the water gets to your tap, graffiti gets cleaned, or a pot hole gets filled?

Join us as the Encinitas Public Works Department Invites the Public to Tour the Public Works Yard

The City of Encinitas Public Works Department invites the public to take an educational tour of the public works facility, located at 160 Calle Magdalena in Encinitas, on May 21 from 12:00pm until 2:00pm.  Representatives from the City of Encinitas Public Works Department and San Dieguito Water District will explain how they maintain the City’s infrastructure, including streets, storm drains, sewers, buildings and the water system.  This event is being held during National Public Works Week.

Larry Watt, Public Works Director/San Dieguito Water District General Manager says, “This is a great opportunity for the public to visit us at our facility and learn more about what the 55 employees of our Department do every day to insure that the public infrastructure in Encinitas is well maintained.”

The program will be comprised of displays and an equipment show-and-tell.  Highlights include a demonstration by the San Dieguito Water District on how the public water system works, educating the public on how water flows from the Lake Hodges Reservoir to the tap in their home.  The District’s water conservation specialist will outline ways to conserve water, an especially important lesson during this current level 2 drought alert.

Employees from the Streets Division will demonstrate how defaced street signs are cleaned.  Using a watershed model, Storm Water staff will demonstrate how rain water moves through the drainage system and out to the ocean.

The Wastewater Division will demonstrate how the inside of sewer lines are inspected and cleaned using a remote control camera.  Representatives from the San Elijo Wastewater Plant and West Coast Arborists will also provide educational demonstrations.

President John F. Kennedy instituted National Public Works Week in 1960 as an annual reminder of the many ways public works contributes to our quality of life in American communities.  It is observed each year during the third week of May.
