Big changes on the San Diego AM radio dial this Monday.  Live-and-local La Dona Harvey takes over Laura Schlessinger’s KOGO am-600 slot, Monday/Friday from noon to 3 p.m.   Our own Gayle Falkenthal believes  Harvey to be a friend of the individual liberty viewpoint.  Dr. Laura, meanwhile, goes over to XM/Sirius satellite radio (11 am – 2 pm),  leaving would-be political censors no leverage with which to silence her famously  ‘incorrect’ views on family life.

Dr. Laura did her final national radio show today,  with a purely positive curtain call. Listeners filled the 3 hours with stories of how her tough-but-empathetic advice has changed their lives , and their families, for the better.  Schlessinger said she tired of constant FCC complaints and sponsor boycotts from pressure groups trying to silence her.  The FCC has no power over satellite radio, and the XM/Sirius chief (legendary Mel Karmazin) personally recruited her with a pledge of editorial freedom.    On today’s show,  she hinted she will  talk more openly about political topics from now on.   I predict there’ll be some fireworks during the Monday program.

LaDona Harvey is familiar as a KOGO news anchor, but now she will do a Live call-in program addressing a variety of issues, with a local flavor.  SD Rostra’s Gayle Falkenthal calls the addition of 15 hours of live-and-local talk at AM 600 a major development, and that is enough to convince this observer.

For the moment it looks like a Win-Win situation for both Dr. Laura and LaDona Harvey.

  1. This IS indeed great news! To replace the narcissistic whining of Dr. Laura’s guests with La Dona Harvey discussing local political issues is a HUGE improvement.

I’ve been a guest on La Dona’s KOGO show a couple of times (she has subbed in for Chris Reed, among others). La Dona is both knowledgeable and an ally philosophically — well, as much of an ally as this curmudgeon can hope for. We had a great time on air — obviously that got her the regular gig!

    Speaking of narcissistic.

  2. AJ Levi…. If you are jones-ing for Dr. Laura, there are
at least a couple ways to still hear her….

    (A) Satellite Radio (XM 155 and Sirius 102) from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday or (B) by accessing her podcasts
    at http://www.drlaura.com/

XM replays her show at night, and I am listening to
that this evening. She has many fewer commercial
interruptions now. Her program is better than ever.

LaDona is just in her first few weeks, give her a little
time to find her voice and comfort level. She is live &
local radio, and one of the few places where our
elected officials answer questions (Martin Garrick
    was on today).
