Media believe the local GOP fight is real!

It’s hard for us to believe that many in the local media actually think this rift is real within the San Diego County Republican Party.

Seriously.

Two years ago the local GOP-powers-that-be realized the only way they could look like they’re gaining any ground in the region is to first appear even worse off than reality.

“Absolutely everything will be uphill, if we start even lower,” was the way one Republican leader envisioned it. “Even modest wins will subsequently appear as huge steps.”

With that a plan was born:

  • Create two fake factions, with supposed Carl DeMaio forces on one side and what DeMaio will call the “East County Mafia” on the other — Brian Jones, Joel Anderson, Andrew Hayes, and others.
  • Pit one candidate from each side against each other in the only open Assembly seat guaranteed to go Republican, while insufficiently funding other races, thus ensuring a minimal number of GOP legislators in the county.
  • A handful of people from both factions to constantly go after each other on social media, instead of doing any effective campaign work, thus perpetuating the perception of true detest between the sides; or at least the perception among the 87 voters actually following weird Facebook pages or San Diego Rostra.
  • Combine this with reports of prolonged internecine warfare within the party — Stage one palace coup during the election cycle, then another “Uhhh, never mind” one to follow.
  • Someone to call for an alternative third party as a result of all of the bitter ugliness.

Yeah, because we’ve never heard that last one before. The number of meaningful third party organizations created over the years? That’s like the potential of a brand spanking new San Diego City Hall. Non-existent.

With every act of the theater now effectively played out, the stage is truly set as “all uphill from here” for local Republicans in 2026.

Nice job!

Regardless, those in the media truly love this stuff. Not only that, they actually believe it’s real!
