La Mesa-Spring Valley School Board Member Claims Reopening Schools is a “White Supremacist” Ideology

Board Member Claims Asking Teachers to Return to Class is Akin to “Slavery”

Just days after the entire school board of Oakley Union Elementary School District was forced to resign after claiming parents who want schools reopened just “want their babysitters back,” another controversial video has surfaced of a school board member claiming any effort to reopen schools was “racist” and reflected “white supremacy.”

On February 23, the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District Board met virtually using zoom video. When the issue of reopening schools came up, Board Member Charda Bell-Fontenot became agitated and declared “That seems like a very white supremacist ideology to force people to comply with…you know…to conform…just letting you know…I don’t want to be part of forcing anybody to do anything they don’t want to do – that’s what slavery is.”

Bell-Fontenot urged the board to not act on the issue of reopening schools during the meeting, declaring “we don’t have to give anybody any date…we do not have to make a decision today.”

When a fellow board member shared survey results showing 70-80 percent of parents favored reopening schools, Bell-Fontenot dismissed the notion that they survey was representative by asking “Who are the 70-80 percent and where are they? Which school site? Which language group?”

Bell-Fontenot seemed surprised when other board members informed her that the meeting was being recorded.

News of the video first broke on the DeMaio Report on NewsRadio 600 KOGO. Carl DeMaio called for Bell-Fontenot to resign as a school board member immediately.

“The only racism I see here is coming directly from Bell-Fontenot for claiming only white people want to have their kids go back to school as soon as possible,” said DeMaio. “It is absolutely shameful that Bell-Fontenot is screaming ‘racism’ as a way to try to block the reopening of schools at a time when the data all shows that minority students are disproportionately impacted by school closures,” DeMaio concluded.

  1. Ms. Bell-Fontenot,

I heard your remarks today and you are an embarrassment to the taxpayers and parents of your area and you should resign. Your ignorant statement that somehow those parents who want to reopen the schools are supporting a “White Supremacist” ideology is outrageous and is, in itself, an ignorant racist statement. Public schools all over America are open and private schools here in San Diego have been opened for months. And none of these schools are having any “spikes” in COVID infections. More school children in California die each year from the flu than from COVID. The fact that you parrot the teacher union propaganda that our schools must remain closed is bad enough. But even worse is your condescending attitude toward parents and taxpayers. Let me remind you that you work for the taxpayers in the area that elected you. You do NOT work for the teachers union. If you cared more about the children than the union agenda, you would be an advocate for parents and would be working to get our schools back open. But apparently, you have other agendas that do not include what’s best for our children. It’s time for you to resign.

  2. Chardá Bell-Fontenot is an ignorant fool. In other words she is the perfect person for a California public school board!

  3. It’s strange that she uses “white supremacist” as if it were a normal adjective that people use every day. I suspect she walks around thinking about slavery and white supremacy every moment of her life, and is oblivious that it comes off as toxic to people who don’t live inside that bubble.

  4. Bell-Fontenot comes across as a disturbed and very ignorant person with a chip on her shoulder. Her colleagues should urge her to resign, if she won’t do that on her own.

  5. I think people are making more out of this. She was upset, but if you read what she said.. she didn’t feel comfortable making people teach in-person by some arbitrary date. She could’ve found a better way to express it. But I get what she meant.
The survey was misleading as many of us were told to vote for hybrid because we might lose our kids’ teachers. Instead we could opt out later.
If the county data says covid numbers are low, then fine. Blindly reopening doesn’t seem smart to me.

  6. Absolutely tragic that we have somebody like that on our school board. She is not only highly unprofessional but she is not qualified to make decisions for multiple schools and families to re-open. I don’t know how she became a board member but she does not seem qualified at least from what I can hear in this conversation. Absolutely disgraceful. I’m a white lady myself and I’m highly offended and I’m beginning to feel as if I should be ashamed of my color. I am cautious what I say because I don’t wanna come off ever as being a racist. I don’t think that conversation should have happened on a zoom call in a professional meeting. I personally am insulted. These types of unprofessional people will end up causing us all to homeschool our children. Absolutely unacceptable please have her dismissed immediately.
