It’s time to restore Hetch Hetchy

A recent article in “California Watch” got me thinking once again about the worthwhile struggle to restore Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite by removing O’Shaughnessy Dam.

What saddens me the most is the lack of support from environmentalists to remove this dam. Could it be that the home of the Sierra Club and the bastion of liberalism in California (if you haven’t guess, I’m talking San Francisco) doesn’t want to make the sacrifices to control their water usage that would make this dream a reality?

Restrictions on water usages always hang over arid Southern California. When there is talk of increasing that supply, environmentalists scream “no way,” but when there is talk of restoring Hetch Hetchy, San Francisco — dependent on water from its dam — whines about the costs of making improvements to the existing infrastructure and possible limitation of water usage.

My liberal friends, stand up for something right and call for the removal of O’Shaughnessy Dam.

As they say, “what is good for the goose is good for the gander.”
