And Kurt Bardella is Issa’s “irrepressible spokesman and Mini-Me,” writes Mark Leibovich online Tuesday in the Grey Lady. In print Wednesday, it was A-1. (That’s the first page, for those of you not familiar with the dead-tree editions of newspapers.)

New York Times on Darrell Issa

New York Times on Darrell Issa

The article discusses Issa’s knack for getting under the none-too-thick skin of President Obama by seizing on issues that resonate with the public. To fight back against Issa, the article says, “Democratic operatives have been circulating hefty opposition research files on him.”

  1. Bad Luck for the White House.

Rep. Darrell Issa can neither be bought off, nor
    intimidated, by anyone.

They’re kidding themselves if they think otherwise.

  2. According to Voice of San DIego:
“CityBeat has been investigating Rep. Darrell Issa and found that an analysis of “Issa’s 2010 financial disclosure statement — an annual report of his financial holdings–revealed several conflicts of interest and a real-estate deal that benefited Issa to the tune of $3 million.”

The deal, regarding property in North County, “raises red flags,” a good-government advocate told the paper, adding that “there must be some deliberate or careless pricing of the property that benefitted Issa.”

Issa didn’t comment for the story.”

Needless to say, that Brylcreem look may be tarnished.

Here’s a link to the CityBeat article.

That article itself has no links, so here’s some. This goes to the Pacific Coast Business Times article, published in November.

And here is a link to a 2006 San Diego Business Journal article on Issa’s holdings.

The SDBJ article says Issa is a partner in Phoenix-based DEI Professional Services LLC. But the Pacific Coast Business Times article refers to DEI LLC. Are these two names for the same company, two related entities, or two different companies?

Regarding the CityBeat article, I think it would have benefited by more even-handed political labeling. The article’s second graf identifies Issa as a “conservative firebrand,” but fails to point out the left-leaning politics of critics like Zachary Roth.

  4. Dream on, “Gwendolyn”, Darrell Issa is not going
to stop telling the truth about abuses of power in
    D.C.

The “good government” watchdog (unnamed by
‘Gwendolyn’) is the Ralph Nader-inspired Public
    Citizen. Surprise!

The City beat article examines a real estate deal
and eventually admits in their key sentence that:

“CityBeat has so far been unable to establish any
specific connections between Issa and East West
Bank: Bank officials have not contributed to his
campaign and he has sponsored no legislation that
would specifically benefit the bank. ”

    Ooops !

  5. Dear Bradley,
    Re: CityBeat article:
    “more even-handed political labeling.”?
Well, I guess that evens things out….since the SD Business Journal is mostly right leaning.

And, I’d say the DEI Professional Services LLC and the referred to DEI LLC are one in the same. So?

    Gwendolyn,
“Well, I guess that evens things out….since the SD Business Journal is mostly right leaning.”

What precisely is mostly right-leaning about the San Diego Business Journal’s articles or reporters?

“And, I’d say the DEI Professional Services LLC and the referred to DEI LLC are one in the same. So?”

Do you know this for a fact?

  7. Gwen, in her typical MO of coming on here and posting any bad stuff she can find about the Republicans she doesn’t like (all of them?), she currently fails to note that she is dealing with a longtime, respected journalist in Bradley Fikes, who knows a little something about “even handed” labeling in newsprint. CityBeat, in fact, admits to being “progressive,” just like we admit to being center-right. Fikes is simply sharing an opinion as a journalist that CityBeat could have noted the political leanings of Issa’s critic, just like it labeled Issa himself. His last question to Gwen stands…does she know for a fact that the two companies are the same? Or, does it simply suit her personal bias that they are? Maybe they are one in the same. A journalist would try to pin it down, one way or the other, not simply assume. A liberal firebrand would assume.

If Gwendolyn has actual evidence on the companies, she’s welcome to link to it here.

Noting a source’s political leanings in a political story is simply good journalism, especially if the source is portrayed as an informed expert. It lets the reader know if the story is based on diverse sources, or if the reporter is making his case with people who have a political axe to grind. And journalism is supposed to be about service to readers.

CityBeat is to be praised for openly stating its political bias. Transparency in journalism is a good thing. But this particular story is something less than wholly transparent about its sources’ own bias.
