The car2go program is reportedly operating in Europe, Canada, and I believe Austin Texas at this time. The Yelp reviews were not all flattering from Austin so hopefully the technology they intend to deploy in San Diego has had some of the bugs worked out:

San Diego and car2go are making history by launching North America’s first large-scale electric carsharing program with smart electric drive vehicles. City leaders, EV and carsharing enthusiasts, and community groups will celebrate this historic milestone during a media event in downtown San Diego. The event will include a demonstration of car2go’s new smart fortwo electric drive vehicle and its unique carsharing telematics, along with an ECOtality charging station demonstration.
