Gun Owners PAC to introduce coalition opposing Proposition 63 and recent new gun laws

A coalition formed by the San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO), a political action committee promoting Second Amendment rights, will hold an outdoor press conference starting promptly at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 29, at the San Diego County Administration Building, 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego. The press conference, featuring a group of local elected officials, business owners, and community leaders, will be held on the west side of the County Administration Building, near the water fountain, overlooking the harbor. The press conference will include a demonstration of how to legally not comply with California’s newly expanded “Assault Weapon Ban.” The news media is invited to attend.

“We are calling attention to the aggressive effort to significantly limit or eliminate ownership and the use of firearms and the firearms industry in California in violation of the Second Amendment,” said Michael Schwartz, executive director, SDCGO. “Recent gun laws and Proposition 63 are not about public safety and will in no way stop crime. Turning law-abiding citizens into criminals with overreaching laws is wrong for California.”

Some of the elected officials expected to attend the press conference will include 75th District State Assemblywoman Marie Waldron (R-Escondido), along with local city council members Matt Hall (Carlsbad), Richard Bailey (Coronado), Rob McNelis (Santee), Amanda Rigby (Vista), Guy McWhirter (La Mesa), Jerry Kern (Oceanside), and Brian P. Bilbray (Imperial Beach).

Also attending will be several community groups, including San Diego County Republican Party, Log Cabin Republicans, Republican Liberty Caucus, and Freedom Fighters Foundation.

Businesses represented at the press conference are expected to include AO Sword of El Cajon, Black Cat Firearms instructors, CCW USA firearms training of San Diego, Gatzke Dillon and Balance LLP of Carlsbad, Morgan Realty of San Diego, and Lance Pelky & Associates of San Diego.

Scheduled speakers at the press conference include Waldron, KOGO News Radio 600-AM talk show host Carl DeMaio, business owner Ryan Peterson of Gunfighter Tactical, and Moncia Fay, a Spanish-speaking naturalized citizen and recently re-elected to the Republican Central Committee representing the 78th Assembly District.

Schwartz said speakers at the press conference will voice opposition to Prop. 63, backed by Lt. Gov Gavin Newsom, a Democratic candidate for governor in 2018. If passed, the ballot measure, billed as “Safety for All” by supporters, would tighten California’s already tough gun control laws by requiring background checks to buy ammunition, outlaw possession of normal capacity ammunition magazines, and turn the victims of crime into victims again if they do not report their gun stolen in a timely manner.

Additional speakers will address legislation recently signed into law by Gov. Brown, Schwartz said. New laws opposed by SDCGO include: Senate Bill 1446 that will prohibit the possession of normal capacity gun magazines that hold more than 10 rounds beginning July 2017; Assembly Bill 1511 makes it a crime to loan a firearm to a non-family member unless you are doing so in person; Assembly Bill 1135 and Senate Bill 880, both identical bills, expands the definition of an assault weapon to include bullet buttons; Senate Bill 1235 that bans online ammunition purchases in the state. All ammo purchases must be done in person, face-to-face, and a background check is required, along with a fee. California residents are prohibited from buying ammo in another state and returning to their home with the ammo.

Founded in 2015, the San Diego County Gun Owners is a registered political action committee (FPPC ID #1379388) and advocacy organization focused on organizing the gun industry and community and protecting the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment right to bear arms.
