After hearing from four candidates tonight — former San Diego Councilman Carl DeMaio, Congressman Duncan Hunter, former Congressman Darrell Issa and State Senator Brian Jones — the Republican Party of San Diego County could not achieve a 2/3 vote of its members to endorse in the 50th Congressional District.

All four Republicans will appear on the March 2020 ballot should they each meet filing requirements in the next several weeks.

To some, the most significant result of tonight’s vote was incumbent Congressman Hunter not getting the support of the GOP, after the party stuck with him in the 2018 election in the midst of his ongoing legal travails.

The party did endorse former Senator Joel Anderson over Poway Mayor Steve Vaus in the contest to succeed 2nd District County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, in what is likely to be a highly contested local race.

The party also endorsed Joe Leventhal in the race to succeed 5th District San Diego City Councilman Mark Kersey. Patrick Batten also sought the GOP’s support.
