It seems an unlikely political career path.
To start in local elected office, then to eventually become a governor? No, that alone isn’t so rare.
But to start that path as an officeholder in one nation, then finalize it at the heights of power in a different nation? That’s definitely a rarity.
How about getting accused of corruption as a politician? Way less rare.
Jaime Bonilla Valdez, a dual citizen who served as a board member of the San Diego-area Otay Water District from 2000 to 2012, then eventually as the Governor of Baja California from 2019 to 2021, is now facing accusations of embezzlement and abuse of power related to a failed, multi-million dollar solar power plant project in Mexicali. He has pleaded not guilty.
A quick web search finds Bonilla Valdez’s overall career in both the U.S. and Mexico to be lined with a smattering of various scandals. He has never been convicted of any crime.
Hoodline has the story.
