DeMaio Proposal Would Require Congress to Comply with All Laws – Including the “No Fear Act” Requiring Sexual Harassment Training

San Diego – When he announced his candidacy for Congress last month, Carl DeMaio outlined a number of bold reforms, including his “Fix Congress First” Plan to require Congress to live under the same laws that the rest of us live under.

“Members of Congress should not be above the law and should receive no special exemptions,” DeMaio says in explaining his Fix Congress First Plan.

“It’s time to force Congress to live under the same laws that the rest of us live under – including the requirement that Congress comply with all sexual harassment laws,” DeMaio says.

For example, Congress passed a law years ago known as the “No Fear Act” which requires federal government executives to undergo sexual harassment training. The goal of this training is to not only prevent individuals themselves from engaging in behavior that could be harassment, but to help them look for signs of sexual harassment in the workplace by other managers.

There was one catch with the “No Fear Act” – like many other laws, Congress specifically exempted itself from the law. As a result, Members of Congress do not receive sexual harassment training.

By passing DeMaio’s Fix Congress First Plan, that would change – and workers in Congress would receive the same protections as workers in any other workplace in the country. More importantly, Members of Congress would be held to the same standards of accountability as any other manager under federal law.
