SAN DIEGO – Citing the need to protect San Diego’s economic recovery, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, candidate for Mayor of San Diego, today pledged to protect San Diego taxpayers by opposing an upcoming initiative to hike commercial property taxes.
“San Diegans already pay among the highest income and sales taxes in the nation. At a time when we are working to keep businesses in San Diego and attract new employers, we must protect all taxpayers from schemes to undermine Prop. 13,” said Dumanis. “The initiative recently filed opens the floodgates for higher property taxes on California businesses and directly threatens our ability to generate jobs in San Diego, and that’s why I’ll oppose it.”
The California Taxpayers Association/CalTax reports that, “A split roll represents a massive increase in the cost of doing business in California. This increase will result in higher prices on consumer products and a less-competitive climate for California’s businesses to expand and create jobs. Such a move would imperil the state’s economy and would be the single most damaging tax policy change that could occur in California.”
“My goal as mayor will be to make San Diego the easiest place in California to start or expand a business, and create jobs. That means holding the line on taxes, getting the city’s financial house in order, reforming pensions, and advocating for the city’s job creators. It’s hard enough already for businesses to grow in California, and we cannot allow efforts to make it even harder to succeed,” added Dumanis.
