SAN DIEGO – District Attorney and San Diego mayoral candidate Bonnie Dumanis today issued the following statement opposing any city property tax increase to bail out the financially troubled San Diego Unified School District.

“The financial situation at San Diego Unified has reached a crisis stage, and San Diego taxpayers should not be asked to bail out the district with a parcel tax hike.”

“The voters already spoke on this issue last year when Proposition J was rejected at the ballot box.  Their message to the district was clear: get your financial house in order, without raising taxes.”

“San Diego Unified needs to get serious about bringing costs in line with reality and reforming the way it does business.  The city has done this with its workforce expenditures, the county has done the same, and now it’s time for San Diego Unified to do the same.”

  1. Shame on Bonnie Dumanis! While she grasps with her dirty hands all the (undeserved) pension money she will receive from the City upon her retirement, the Dirty D.A. tells San Diego Unified and the children to go eat cake!

Maybe it is true that SDUSD could rearrange some labor contracts and get rid of some paper-shuffling bureaucrats, but that could also be said for any tax-draining, entity sucking, public monolith.

All this is from the floundering Dumanis campaign, is a shameless stunt aimed at making Bonnie look tough on saving dollars since Carl DeMaio has gained so much political capital from the pension reform initiative. As Bonnie flails away at seeming relevant to the voters, those of us who can see through her desperation wish that the rest of the San Diego voters would wise up too!

  2. All that aside, I am glad to at least hear a candidate for mayor discussing a potential parcel tax (there’s a bond measure the district is considering as well).

Although I haven’t decided which candidate will best serve our city as mayor, my decision will be, in part, based on their view of education in our city.
