On the busiest District 3 day since incumbent Supervisor  Pam Slater-Price withdrew,   GOP-endorsed Steve Danon won backing from Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher, while Solana Beach Deputy Mayor Dave Roberts (D) officially declared his bid  for D3  Supervisor.   Rostra’s Jerome Stocks has last week’s D3 developments here.  Republicans (115,962 voters) have a  20,942-registration edge over Democrats (95,020 voters) in Dist. 3 as of January 3, 2012, per the San Diego County Registrar of Voters office.  The GOP history here dates to Supervisors Harry Scheidle (1968-72), Lou Conde (1972-76), Roger Hedgecock (1976-84), Susan Golding (1984-92) and Slater-Price (1992-present).

…..HOW WE GOT HERE, AND WHAT IS STILL AHEAD

Steve Danon  began a challenge to incumbent  Pam Slater-Price  in January 2010 (!)   Supervisor Slater-Price announced in August 2011 that  she would not seek a sixth term in office.  Danon has raised over $100,000 for the race with a financial team led by Karolyn Dorsee.  His campaign consultant is the successful Tom Shepard.  Danon has the clear edge today since he he’s been working the vineyard for two years, and has a strong team and dozens of key endorsements.  But it is still a long way to Election Day, June 5, 2012,  and Dave Roberts is a significant opponent.

…..NATHAN FLETCHER OPTS FOR STEVE  DANON

In choosing to back Danon, Assemblyman Fletcher stated, “It’s time for a new generation of leadership to move San Diego County forward; a generation that has bold, fresh ideas and the leadership to put them into action.  Steve is that kind of leader.  I look forward to working with him to make San Diego County the best place in the world to create  good-paying,  local jobs at every level of the economy, to restore accountability and trust in local government and to continue reigning in the spending that’s left San Diego in a financial quagmire for the past decade,” concluded Fletcher.

…..DAVE ROBERTS STATES HIS CASE

The Solana Beach Deputy Mayor explained his candidacy. “These are challenging times, which makes a candidate’s background more important than ever,” Roberts said.  “I am running for County Supervisor because I have extensive business experience, a proven track record of success, and a vision for our county over the next decade.”  Roberts added, “It is important to deliver critical county services in the most cost-effective manner possible.  I am a self-starter; I worked to put myself through college and graduate school.”

…..WHERE IS DISTRICT 3, ANYWAY?

Glad you asked.  It includes  San Diego City north of Route 52  (Penasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Carmel Valley, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Tierrasanta, Golden Triangle, Carmel Mountain, etc.) along with the fine cities of  Escondido, Encinitas, Del Mar and Solana Beach.

  1. Be really interesting race to watch. Interestingly, history is on Steve’s side – if I am remembering correctly both Horn and Jacob made the jump to supervisor as their first elected office.

  2. Post

Erik…this is also the first non-incumbent Supervisorial primary since 1994 [when both John McDonald and Leon Williams stepped aside].

  3. DJ was a member of the Jamul/Dulzura School Board for 17 years and served as president of the California School Boards Association in the late 80s. East County is close to Valhalla, that’s why we know that. (Not the high school.)
