Press Release
Democrat Endorsed Primary Candidate Dave Myers Endorses John Hemmerling for Sheriff
“John Hemmerling showed me he is the change that’s needed.” – Dave Myers
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — On Wednesday, retired Sheriff’s Commander Dave Myers endorsed John Hemmerling for Sheriff and released the following statement:
“I have decided to fully and enthusiastically endorse John Hemmerling for Sheriff. Public safety is neither a left or right issue, a Democrat or Republican issue – it is a vital public service that requires individuals of the highest moral, ethical, and competency order to lead the brave women and men in law enforcement. We do not currently have that at the Sheriff’s Department. John has shown me that he is a true leader who will restore competence, confidence, and integrity to our Sheriff’s Department. I urge all of my supporters to vote for John Hemmerling for Sheriff.”
Dave Myers was the endorsed candidate of the San Diego County Democratic Party in the June 2022 primary, placing third with almost 19 percent of the vote. Dave served in law enforcement for 35 years, first as a Carlsbad police officer and then as a San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy. Protecting our communities and providing assistance to those in need is his passion. Before retiring in 2018, Dave served in almost every division within the Sheriff’s Department, from detentions (jails) to serving as a Commander responsible for patrol stations and their law enforcement operations.
John Hemmerling responded, “I have immense respect for the courage it took for Dave Myers to cross party lines and endorse my candidacy for Sheriff. Dave and I don’t agree on everything politically, but when it comes to restoring leadership, accountability and transparency in the Sheriff’s Department, we agree completely. Protecting public safety, ending the status quo, and stopping the senseless deaths in our jails are not partisan issues. I enthusiastically welcome Dave Myers’ endorsement.”
Hemmerling’s other major endorsements include Mayors Bill Wells (El Cajon), John Minto (Santee), and Richard Bailey (Coronado); former-San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer; retired-San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman; San Diego Councilmember Chris Cate; San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson; former-San Diego City Attorney Jan Goldsmith; the San Diego Deputy City Attorneys Association; San Diego Asian Americans for Equality; the Latino Political Action Committee of San Diego; and the Republican Parties of California and San Diego County.

Dave Myers “crosses” the line to endorse a Republican, a Republican who only became one in December of ’21.
Hemmerlings’ fatal flaw, in my book, is his support for the illegal red flag law (for which the CA AG Bonta congratulated him on….yea, the same Bonta who released the personal info of all of CA’s CCW holders….by “mistake”.)
Republican endorsed candidate, full context, on guns and all the other issues in this race against weak, ineffective Democrat Kelly Martinez: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/story/2022-09-09/nov-2022-election-q-a-with-john-hemmerling-candidate-for-san-diego-county-sheriff
Q: The former sheriff was criticized for limiting concealed-carry weapon permits. Would your approach be strict or lenient to issuing permits, and how would you define “good cause”?
A: Individuals have the right to keep and bear arms. Individuals also expect the process to be fair and transparent. This has not always been the case in San Diego. We have read the recent stories of bribery, favoritism and back-door dealings. That ends when I’m sheriff.
We will issue concealed-carry permits to all persons who complete the required training and demonstrate good moral character by passing the required background investigation. Every applicant who meets the state’s statutory requirements will get the permit. The process will be clear, fair, transparent and efficient.
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed what I have said about “good cause” all along: Constitutionally protected rights such as the Second Amendment’s right to keep and bear arms must be made equally available to all responsible citizens, without arbitrary or biased discretion, allowing every individual to assess their own need for personal safety or self-defense.
The best way to ensure the right to bear arms for responsible gun owners is to remove guns from criminals and the insane. The attorney general recently praised the San Diego city attorney’s gun violence prevention programs as the best in California. However, my opponent is reluctant to use tools to prevent gun violence that are used effectively and fairly by other police chiefs and sheriffs statewide. As sheriff, I will use every law on the books, with complete due process in court, to deny those who pose a grave risk to public safety access to firearms.

Let me provide the proper insight to the above.
The best way to ensure the right, WHICH I WILL TREAT AS A PRIVILEDGE, to bear arms for responsible gun owners is to remove guns from criminals and the insane, THOUGH THERE IS NO CORRELATION BETWEEN YOUR RIGHT AND THE CRIMINALS/INSANE. The DEMOCRATIC attorney general, who illegally released the personal information of all CA CCW holders and “assault weapons” owners including the reason some applications were denied recently praised the DEMOCRATIC San Diego city attorney’s UNCONSTITUTIONAL gun violence prevention program as the best in ANTI-GUN California. However, my opponent is reluctant to use tools to prevent gun violence that are used effectively and fairly by other police chiefs and sheriffs statewide BECAUSE ALL THESE DEMOCRATIC CHIEFS AND SHERIFFS CAN’T BE WRONG. . As sheriff, I will use every UNCONSTITUTIONAL law on the books, with complete due process in court AFTER I HAVE TAKEN YOUR FIREARMS, AFTER A LONG WAIT, SANS ANY CHARGES, ASSUMING YOU CAN AFFORD LEGAL REPRESENTATION, to deny those who pose a grave risk to public safety, USING ARBITRARY AND CAPRICIOUS CRITERIA, access to firearms.”
The Second, Fourth and Fifth Amendments to The Constitution of the United States show clearly that the Johnny Come Lately RINO Hemmerling is NOT the person to lead the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

….give me a good address and I will buy one for you. The gun control debate was settled in 1791 and if Hemmerling doesn’t agree…..move along.
P.S. With personal knowledge and experience…..
“We will issue concealed-carry permits to all persons who complete the required training and demonstrate good moral character by passing the required background investigation. Every applicant who meets the state’s statutory requirements will get the permit. The process will be clear, fair, transparent and efficient.”
…this transformation has already taken place.
And it appears that the country agrees with me…
