Got to hand it to liberal Democrat Del Mar Councilwoman Crystal Crawford. After running a negative campaign against Republican Martin Garrick for State Assembly she managed to gather up a big 38% of the vote, losing by some 25,000 ballots cast. But in the last few days Crawford is already telling anyone in North County that she plans to run again for the 74th Assembly Seat in 2012. The problem? There is no district. The rub: all legislative seats will be redrawn in the next six months. She will certainly be in an Assembly seat, but what seat is up in the air. Crawford is literally running for a seat that doesn’t exist.
I got Crawford’s nasty campaign mail in this last election. I thought Garrick, who had the resources of being the Assembly Republican Leader, was very restrained in not unleashing his campaign consultants to rip her a new one. It demonstrates yet again that Garrick is a gentleman. One of the sad truths about term limits is that while we get rid of career politicians, we also lose good citizen-legislators like Martin Garrick. With any luck, he will help find and elect a successor with his quiet dignity and commitment to conservative values.

This is what happens when it is all about the person running and has nothing to do with the people they will represent.
Crawford isn’t alone. Hodges from Garrick’s own office has also started running for a seat that doesn’t exist.
