A massive North County and North City of San Diego TV buy is set for the last five days of the election (starting today) in support of Steve Danon for County Supervisor, say well placed sources.
If “well placed sources” isn’t enough substantiation, Rostra has obtained the nearly final cut of the 30 second ad, with a few “Internal Review Only” seconds at the start…
That ad, or another similar one in support of Danon, will also run during Monday Night Football on ESPN, the same insiders say.
On this end, some brain racking is going on as to whether a TV commercial has EVER aired for a supervisor’s race in San Diego County. Or, maybe only incumbents were able to afford them in the past, if even they have ever run any? If anyone knows, do tell. This is when we miss Jim Sills’ political vise of a brain the most.
In the meantime, conjecture is swirling over a recent Dave Roberts’ personal loan to his campaign against Danon.
In a series of tweets yesterday, Turner Consulting (@TCNewsandViews on Twitter), noted the following…
“Sup Candidate Dave Roberts has loaned his campaign $41,000 triggering election ordinance that frees up caps on donors… but that’s not all … The Ordinance states the Voter Reg & DA’s offices must be notified in advance of such a loan. Roberts has supposedly NOT notified … Such a violation raises the question: Is Roberts desperate, ignorant of the law, or worst yet BOTH. Points the voters need to consider … Stay tuned on reaction from local Pols and news stories that are sure to follow…”
That’s Rostra’s cue, I think. Well, not so much a reaction, as worth a confirmation.
Roberts did indeed loan $41,900 to his campaign and reported it three days later, last Saturday, to the Registrar of Voters, as shown here.
There is no question loans and contributions of this size in the final couple of weeks of a campaign are required to be reported within 24 hours. Further confirmation of any requirement to pre-report a loan is being sought from the Registrar’s office.

Update 11/1/12, 3:05 p.m. Our own late Jim Sills previously established for us that the donor cap is made moot when a candidate reaches $100,000 in loans, such as Carl Hilliard did in this race’s primary match. So, the Twitter conjecture that Roberts’ loan of close to $42,000 makes that the case, is accurate if the candidate made a prior loan making the combined total $100,000 or more. Through September 30, Roberts had loaned his campaign $99,000. Do the math.

Not sure I like the idea of doing a “massive” TV buy 5 days out. Any guestimates on how many absentees already submitted in that neck of the woods. I would bet at least 1/3 if not significantly higher.
