Taylor Thompson, VP of Government Relations for the North San Diego County Association of REALTORS, had some big shoes to fill when Ernie Cowan announced his retirement in 2020.
For those VERY new to town, Cowan was the voice of the REALTORS in the region both publicly and behind the scenes for decades, a co-founder of what can be called the “Albondigas Movement”, and one of San Diego County’s most legendary, successful and beloved political operatives of all time.
With training from Cowan, Taylor Thompson has been quietly making his mark and racking up some impressive wins, working to grow, and now lead, the Deputy Sheriffs Association’s public safety / business political coalition, the principal vehicle for independent political expenditures for Supervisorial and North County municipal races, since 2012.
Now some of Thompson’s work has been recognized by Campaigns & Elections Magazine, the bible of the political consulting industry since 1984.
“A Quality of Life Worth Protecting”, a direct mail piece promoting the reelection of Supervisor Jim Desmond, and paid for by the California REALTORS Association’s CREPAC, has been chosen as a finalist for Best Direct Mail Piece of 2022 in the category of independent expenditures for a local, county or judicial campaign.
C&E has also recognized two other items of political communication, produced by and for San Diego politicos, for recognition this year:
Brian Jones’ “Closing Mailer” is a finalist in the category of Nation’s Best Direct Mail Piece for a Republican State Legislative Race; and,
The Deputy Sheriffs’ Associations “Roll Fold” mailer, produced to defeat Dave Myers for Sheriff, has been chosen as a finalist for “2022’s Best Direct Mail Innovation.”
Final winners will be announced tonight at the industry’s Gala at the Aria Resort in Las Vegas, but only the industry’s best stuff gets submitted, and only 5% of submissions are chosen as finalists, so our local politicos already have much to celebrate!
C&E’s Reed Awards recognize both the sponsors and the creative agencies responsible for each winning piece of campaign communications, so kudos also to John Wainio, the political consultant responsible for producing all three of the local items being recognized tonight.
DSA and Wainio previously won a Best in the Nation award from C&E in 2011, along with late SD Rostra contributor Jim Sills.
See all the mentioned pieces below.
