According to CaliforniaWatch.org, San Diego was among 11 counties in the state to miss a primary election deadline to mail over 8,000 ballots to overseas and military voters. CalWatch reports that failure to send the ballots by April 21 is in violation of the Uniformed & Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.
Anyone know the stats on what percentage of military personnel vote Republican? You can look it up.

As a California Veteran I am disgusted, angry, and appalled that the Governor of the state would not ensure with the Secretary of State who happens to be a Dem also Debra Bowen, would have made it clear to county registrars that compliance was mandatory. Everyone connected with this boondoggle of Government FAILURE to assure fair and equitable elections should resign immediately and effort should be undertaken to get ballots to the military no matter what it costs or what it takes. Every registrar in any county that failed this process needs to be taken to task for this anomaly in the voting of an election. This is totally demonstrating irresponsibility by those involved and it is a disgrace to every California Citizen. The Courts in CA need to take action against those who let this happen. How very sad a commentary to add to the distrust of Government.
Wouldn’t the blame for this, at least as far as San Diego is concerned, fall on Registrar Deborah Seiler, the person that has been so effusively praised on this site? Are you advocating for her resignation?
This Election Year, make-believe, Stunt is transpaperent Photo-Op politicsby Attorney General Eric Holder (Democrat) and California Secretary of State Debra Bowen (Democrat).
In Government, it’s not who wins or loses that Counts, it is Who Gets the Blame. Pointing at the local nonpartisan Registrars of Voters is the easy way out.
Jim,
Who is responsible for sending out the ballots? I assumed (as did Arthur Plourde) that since 47 of the 58 counties mailed the ballots in time, that the blame in the other 11 counties should be placed on the local officials there. If that is not correct, please tell me why.
Alger, who is “you”? I provided the article above, not another blogger. I don’t remember if I have ever opined in the past on Rostra about the Registrar of Voters. I may have. But, this post is about something that has taken place, as information for readers. I know little about who is ultimately responsible for what has taken place. Others might.
But, what does the fact that individual authors on this site having opinions one way or the other about the RoV have to do with the opinion of one Rostra blogger? You spend enough time here to know that every author has individual opinions about different issues, and that there is no set Rostra opinion on any matter, unless it is stated as such. So, how does the fact that two other bloggers or ten other bloggers may have “effusively praised” anyone have to do with the opinion of another two or ten bloggers, or anything at all, other than in your one-size-fits all “gotcha” world, where you would like to believe that all conservatives are of like mind on everything under the sun?
Need a good lawyer out there to step up and file class action on violation of this as well as the one man one vote principle that these have had their vote disenfranchised. Make it so that no county can send out absentee ballots at all if they miss this deadline. Please some good California attorney step up to this cause.
Greg,
Your post simply pointed out a very disturbing fact – many of our military members from California may not have their votes counted this election. My last comment was not directed at you; it was directed at Jim Sills who has been opining on the greatness of our Registrar and has a shown an inability to ever admit that someone he supports could ever be wrong. His comment above blaming Eric Holder and Debra Bowen instead of Deborah Seiler is just the latest case in point.
Life is not an action movie with good guys and bad guys and The world is simply not as “black and white” as some would like to make it out to be. I think it is a good idea to point that out when the opportunity presents itself.

Jim,
Thanks for proving my point. I only wish that I, like you, could be right 100% of the time and that all those I supported were also 100% perfect.
I’m not one to think this is partisan or purposeful, as partisan as I may be. And I do agree, the job of a Registrar is not an easy one, and ours does an awesome job. Errors will be made, unfortunately. For me it comes down to one thing: Of all the things a Registrar or a Sec’y of State could be criticized for, or sued for, why would any want to leave themselves open on this one? — the one of disenfranchising those protecting our nation and the accusations of purposeful, partisanship that will naturally go along with it. Just get the damn ballots out on time to those who have a right to vote, and always be thinking about the rights of those far away protecting our right to vote at home.
Barry,
Well said!
I hope your sentiment is something all of us can agree on.
