As a result of this appointment, the reform agenda of Mayor Kevin Faulconer will be stopped dead cold for a year, and probably more. As a big labor guy, expect Ed Harris to push to stop pension reform, and managed competition at a minimum. It didn’t have to be this way. But the three Republican City Council people did nothing to stop it.
From the linked article:
“Harris, who heads the city’s lifeguard union, received support from council members David Alvarez, Mark Kersey, Sherri Lightner, Scott Sherman and Lorie Zapf.”
It’s odd that the Republican Council Caucus unanimously supported Harris, a union chief because:
“The city charter prohibits Harris from running for election to the seat, so he must step down when his term ends in early December. An election to fill the seat will be in June, with a possible runoff in November.”
“In that election, Harris has endorsed Democrat Sarah Boot, who is facing incumbent Councilwoman Lori Zapf, a Republican.”

Dan Holstein got railroaded by people determined to prop up a guy who is actively working to defeat Zapf. I”ll never understand the consultant class.
Me neither Brian. The four people who got votes in the first round of voting were Todd Gloria’s hand-picked darling, Gretchen Newsome, who is more leftist than Hillary Clinton, Ed Harris, big public labor’s candidate, Howard Wayne, who, according to Howard Wayne, was Jerry Brown’s mentor, and Chris Cramer, the owner of Karl Strauss, a committed Democrat. All bad choices. Of the 50+ public comments, only 1 man commented that it was disgusting to hear constantly that Republicans need not apply, since the voters in D2 overwhelmingly elected a Republican twice for D2. He said a Republican should be appointed to this seat. This was the ENTIRE point in my applying for this position, to support the agenda of Kevin Faulconer and the three Republican City Council members. But this idea seemed to get little support. Do you think it’s because I’m a Raiders fan?!
Still, he was GREAT as John Glenn.
I believe this is going to be our finest hour.
Did Kevin Faulconer have a preferred candidate?
