Good for Fletcher backing the pension measure. The real question though is exactly what he was talking about with the leadership of the Fire Union (the most radical of the local unions) yesterday at the same time he was announcing his support.
Anyone?

From the UT editorial on Otay…
This must not happen, and the giveaway approved last week must be rescinded as well. We urge readers to make their outrage known. Otay administrators can be reached at (619) 670-2222. Bonilla’s email address is jbv1@otaywater.gov. Croucher’s is gcroucher@otaywater.gov. Gonzalez’s is dgonzalez05@cox.net. Lopez’s is lopezsdfd@cox.net.
It would have been more surprising if FIlner hadn’t transferred the funds to his mayoral account.
Perhaps Fletcher was telling the firefighters his intention to endorse the pension reform initiative.
Folk, one thing I would caution is that the city is likely to ALWAYS have firefighters. Nothing on the foreseeable future will make THAT go away. They will constitute several hundred employees. I think EVERY candidate should talk with Frank D – if only since local 145 of the International Brotherhood of Firefighters is really about only way to get ANY information about the nitty gritty of the department. The idea that you can’t TALK with someone is pretty ridiculous.
Eric is quite correct that we will still have firefighters — though it IS possible to contract out the function, it ain’t gonna happen.
The point to keep in mind is that, with next to zero recruiting effort and a high pre-qualification level (must have EMT1 certificate to apply for the SDFD), the city still gets probably a hundred or more such applicants for such opening — a clear sign we are paying and pensioning more than the job merits.
While I don’t have any problem talking with union bosses, one should not expect to get “the full skinny.” Union officials will give the same skewed info you’d expect to get from — well, me — only more so. MUCH more so.
Richard,
In reference to the last sentence in your post, all i can say is don’t sell yourself short.
The UT reported today that Fletcher hired political consultant, Amy Thoma, to work for him in the Assembly. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jul/19/fletcher-expands-assembly-staff-amid-mayoral-run/
A few weeks ago, Voice said that Thoma was Fletcher’s “campaign spokeswoman.”

Which one is correct? Or are taxpayers subsidizing Mr. Fletcher’s mayoral campaign?
