Our lame duck Democratic House and Senate have responded to the rather loud voice of November’s election by saying:
“Forget you! We’ll just continue to jam as much legislation through while we can.”
And so, our “unseated congress” tries to vote against extending the Bush tax cuts. They also dig up that beautiful amnesty bill (Oh, excuse me. I meant to say, “Dream Legislation”) for illegal aliens who served in the military. Honoring soldiers always sounds nice. That’s the part they shout out with exuberant glee. The whispered portion of the bill also grants amnesty to illegal college students and… Oops…Well…Um…OK…Their families as well. Did we forget to mention it?
Those are only two of many examples. Don’t get me started on the recent Senate vote to keep earmarks. How’s that for a gracious response to the outcry of citizens?
Am I making the understatement of the century to suggest that these lame duck sessions be permanently discontinued? I can understand a transitory time while leadership changes hands but not a period long enough to be exploited.
If somebody was fired from a job in the private sector, he might be given two week’s notice but he would not be allowed to continue making major company decisions. And yet we just fired a bunch of congressmen and senators who are determined to do just as much damage as they can before January. No, they do not call it damage. In their minds they are so arrogant that they think they know better than anyone, even the people paying their salaries.
I say enough already! Time for these lame ducks to fly south for the winter. Maybe Alan Grayson can put them up in Florida with a new bed and breakfast. Word has it, he’s looking for a new job anyway.

It’s happening closer to home too, Bob. Take a look at what the Oceanside City Council is up to on Wednesday afternoon in another post here on Rostra. Our elected officials have the nerve to wonder why voters are cynical and distrusting. Duh!
I agree with you. At the least, we should limit any governing decisions to issues already on the table. No new measures should be introduced and no significant amendments to existing legislation permitted.

I actually just finished reading your article right before seeing your comment on mine. Excellent job as always, Gayle. Thanks for staying on top of these things. Interesting how we each posted a national and local version of the same phenomenon so close to the same time.
And let’s not forget our own lame duck San Diego City Council whose last official act will be to deny low income San Diegans inexpensive groceries — with their DE FACTO Walmart ban.
