A Fairy Tale Where Straw Spins into Gold

Rumpelstiltskin himself, could not have spun Scott Brown’s victory the way Democrats do it.

In answer to the question, “What were the citizens of Massachusetts trying to tell Washington?” liberal pundits and politicians offered a plethora of creative answers. Some of these performances should be nominated for an Academy Award.

The first quick and easy response was at least anticipated: “This means the people want bi-partisanship.”

Bi -partisanship? That tired old wild card again? The breakout votes in Massachusetts came from Independents, who, when polled, said they were against this current health care bill, higher taxes, and the overall direction of our government. Since Martha Coakley promised to continue with the Obama/Pelosi/Reid direction, while Scott Brown expressed a desire to bring things to a screeching halt, the electorate saw these two candidates on ground so opposite, they could barely wave from the other side of the precipice. And so, how, exactly, was picking the Conservative a vote for bi-partisanship? If Coakley had won, would Democrats have taken that to mean that people wanted Obama to slow down and listen to Republicans? No? Yet the guy elected by those who want to kill the bill was sent to Washington so that he and Obama can work together?

On the other hand, former Democratic Chairman Howard Dean says the people of Massachusetts were trying to tell our administration and Congress that too much bi-partisanship had taken place. Obama was disappointing those who put him into office because he did not go far enough. He was compromising with the Republicans and moderate Democrats.

Before examining Dean’s brilliant analyses, we need a reality check: In fact, no bi-partisanship has been going on. Not one single Republican idea has been included in the current health care bill. As for liberal Democrats reaching out to the Blue Dogs? There really wasn’t much of a hand across the aisle there either. Bribery? Sure! But not bi-partisanship. I’m not a believer in bi-partisanship anyway, so I don’t really care, but I did want to set the record straight.

Back to Howard Dean’s interpretation: Supposedly, the people of Massachusetts want the most liberal form of this health care bill passed, public option and all ,with abortion funding sprinkled on top of the icing. Martha Coakley said she wanted that as well. It was almost central to her campaign. And so, to send a message to Obama that he just darn well better pass the entire health care package, Massachusetts rejects the candidate who promises to fight for it and instead puts in the man who vows to kill this bill altogether. What a shame Howard Dean lost the presidential primary back in 2004. Surely, he would have been a leader in touch with the heartthrob of the people.

Then again, our current president seems every bit as connected. While interviewed by George Stephanopoulos, Obama said:

“And here’s my assessment of not just the vote in Massachusetts, but the mood around the country. The same thing that swept Scott Brown into office swept me into office. People are angry, and they’re frustrated. Not just because of what’s happened in the last year or two years, but what’s happened over the last eight years.”

Now I realize most Conservatives are not as sophisticated as Obama and his Ivy League associates. Therefore, you may not be familiar with all the subtle nuances of his appraisals. But be of good cheer, for if the statement above does not make a whole lot of sense, your ol’ pal, Bob will explain. You see, the people of Massachusetts were so fed up with Bush and the Republicans, that they put Obama and the Democrats in office. They are still mad at Bush and the Republicans. In fact, they are madder than ever! And they continue to blame them for this last year even though the Democrats control the House, the Senate and the Executive Branch. That’s why they just elected a Conservative who campaigned against everything our government has done in 2009. They want Brown in Washington where he can somehow help Obama see how much he needs to continue with all these liberal policies to put that nasty George Bush behind us once and for all.

Was that more clear? If not, it’s because you don’t understand the bizarro universe of the Left, a kind of Twilight Zone where up means down, down means up, and losing an election means the people are demanding that you continue on the same path.

  1. What the public doesn’t want is the far left OR the far right. We want a government that represents every day people who don’t live in either of the extremes espoused by most of our elected officials. When the Republicans re-take the Congress in 2010, they would do well to remember this. The public will not be saying bring on the right-wing wackos, only that we are tired of the left-wing ones.

  3. Jack: Oh my. That’s all you can say? I’d hate to know what your comments look like when you have a lot to say.

Bob, the comment seems to meet the Rostra rules for discussion, but this guy reads a little like the Unabomber.

To Thor’s Assistant, who was commenting on a comment from Jack: I removed Jack’s comment because he really wasn’t discussing anything I wrote in my article. Instead, he wrote a blog of his own which is his right to do on the internet somewhere, I suppose. I do not need it on my blog.

  5. Bob, fair enough, per the rules of this blog, as partially noted:

    “…stick to the topic.”

“Contact info@sdrostra.com if you…may be interested in submitting a guest column.”

Jack did neither, so it is appropo to remove his comment.
