In what could be deemed an act of war against the sovereign borders of the United States, Mexican drug cartels have seized control of at least two American ranches inside the U.S. territory near Laredo, Texas.

Two sources inside the Laredo Police Department confirmed the incident is unfolding and they would continue to coordinate with U.S. Border Patrol today. “We consider this an act of war,” said one police officer on the ground near the scene. There is a news blackout of this incident at this time and the sources inside Laredo PD spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Word broke late last night that Laredo police have requested help from the federal government regarding the incursion by the Los Zetas. It appears that the ranch owners have escaped without incident but their ranches remain in the hands of the blood thirsty cartels.

  1. Ms. Dvorak.. Please cite your sources.. This is abysmal reporting. Similar to the completely false quote you posted, purportedly from ME last year when I was volunteering for the Devore campaign. Yes, you retracted but would not cite your source.

Both Big Govt : http://tinyurl.com/2uk4c95 and the Laredo Morning Times : http://bit.ly/cftFrG are disputing any take over in Texas.. they are citing sources. Thank you,

    Teri Peters

  2. Rick Amato, others are tweeting Michelle Malkin’s contention that this report is false…

@AmatoTalk Rumor, shoddy journalism led 2 InternetFrenzy that drug cartel wars spilled over to TX http://tinyurl.com/23w3v56

    http://michellemalkin.com/2010/07/24/invasion-gangs-gun-battles-at-tex-mex-border/?utm_source=co2hog

Any chance that Ms. Dvorak’s sources were correct about the violence, but didn’t understand the “seized” ranches were in Mexico?

  3. The location cited, I35 near Minerales Road is well inside the US territory. If you use Google earth, there are two very small ranches not far from the Rio Grande. Frankly that area is remote enough and the adjacent cities small enough that there could be everything from Zetas to meth labs to moonshine depending on the group. As to whether it happened and they were chased back, I don’t know, but I DO know that Zetas and MS-13 members were picked up in a drug and gang sweep recently in Dallas. They are establishing their own safe houses and they appear to be trying to create a network for distribution. I cannot tell you how many large urban pot plantations have been found in Southern Dallas county in the past two or three years, but they are sophisticated operations complete with fertilizer and irrigation.

  4. First Kim Dvorak gave us celebrity sleaze about Mel Gibson and his bizarre tape recordings. Now she serves up discredited internet rumors as fact.

It would be a shame if Ms. Dvorak makes this site into another ‘World Nut Daily’.

  5. I thought the rumor questionable from the beginning, because it made no sense. Why would any Mexican drug cartel, no matter how strong, actually seize American territory? An open seizure of land would inevitably be repulsed with greater force than any drug cartel could resist. The American military is a much tougher customer than the Mexican military, and can’t be intimidated or bought off.

Infiltrate, intimidate . . now that makes sense for the drug cartels. Get the reality of power without an open bid for control.

  6. A reader just asked at Bradley Fikes’ post on this subject — http://sdrostra.com/?p=7083 — if we are awake.

We monitor the blog consistently and are indeed quite awake, at least at the present. In fact, you will see above we posted Fikes’ article as a linked comment this morning, to help readers that may only see her article to also see that another Rostra blogger had something to say on the matter.

We also tweeted Brad’s article, resulting in others retweeting it and Rick Amato sharing it with his facebook readers. (Find us on twitter at @sandiegorostra)

That said, what connection does our being “awake” have to do with whether Ms. Dvorak chooses to respond to comments on HER posts? We don’t edit, pre-approve or mandate the content or actions of any of the bloggers on SD Rostra. We DO facilitate a forum for a myriad of bloggers, some of whom may not agree with each other. Case in point: The piece by Brad Fikes.

If you believe that being “awake” means that we should force an independent contributor to this site to respond to comments, or to remove a post, uhhh, that’s not typically part of our job description. Those disagreeing with a story have the freedom — within the parameters of reasonableness and good taste — to disagree with it, call it into question, ask for proof, and the like. Mr. Fikes has done an admirable job of that. “Got Kooks” has also commented his/her disagreement. Ms. Dvorak is an adult and may choose to respond or not.

We’re going back to our nap now. Thanks.

  7. When you go to a restaurant on the weekends and it’s busy they start a waiting list. They start calling out names, they say “Dufresne, party of two. Dufresne, party of two.” And if no one answers they’ll say their name again. “Dufresne, party of two, Dufresne, party of two.” But then if no one answers they’ll just go right on to the next name. “Bush, party of three.” Yeah, what happened to the Dufresnes? No one seems to give a X#@&. Who can eat at a time like this? People are missing! You @X#%$! are selfish. The Dufresnes are in someone’s trunk right now, with duct tape over their mouths. And they’re hungry. That’s a double whammy. Bush, search party of three, you can eat when you find the Dufresnes.

  8. Another spam comment (ad link removed and language cleaned up) that was too funny to remove!
