DeMaio Brings Together Leaders in the Biotech, CleanTech, Communications, Defense, and Other Emerging Sectors
Calling it “one of the most important economic issues facing our region,” Councilmember Carl DeMaio today held his most recent “Pathway to Prosperity” Job Creation Forum to focus on expanding and retaining San Diego’s high tech and defense sectors.
“We must commit to make San Diego the innovation capital of the nation,” said DeMaio.
Not only is job creation on the line, but many of these companies partner regularly with UC San Diego and other local universities to draw millions in research grants, provide hands-on training for students, and provide career opportunities for graduates right here in San Diego.
“Ensuring that we keep the best and brightest graduates from San Diego’s world-class universities local is vital to the long-term growth of San Diego’s economy,” continued DeMaio.
Forty business executives, researchers, government affairs representatives, and experts in each industry spent the morning discussing strategies to improve the business environment in San Diego for technology and defense companies.
Strategies discussed included:
- Cutting red tape and streamlining regulations imposed on businesses by local government.
- Providing incentives for existing businesses to expand and hire more workers.
- Partnering with business trade groups to market the City of San Diego as a premiere location to establish tech companies.
- Creation of a clean tech incubator center and retail expo.
- Reducing regulations that stifle research-and-development, one of the primary sectors in San Diego.
- Ensuring that the military remains a strong presence in the San Diego economy, providing an anchor for related defense companies.
“The importance of the biotech, clean-tech, communications, defense, and other emerging sectors cannot be over-stated: Tens of thousands of jobs – and billions in long-term economic benefits – rely on these tech companies prospering, growing, and staying here in San Diego,” noted DeMaio.
