Project Gunrunner (Mexican Drug Cartels Say Thanks!)

The BATF’s anti-illegal-gun program has accomplished the opposite of its mission, reports Fox News:

It is the closest thing to a smoking gun congressional investigators have in their probe of Project Gunrunner — a program that was intended to stop the flow of guns to criminals in Mexico but instead allowed those guns to be smuggled to Mexico instead.

An internal memo from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives shows that U.S. officials allowed criminals to buy 1,318 guns worth nearly $1 million, even after they suspected the buyers were working for Mexican drug cartels, and that the agency’s effort to stop the guns had “yielded little or no results.”

Patterico blogged on this outrage, pointing out this jaw-dropping information in the BATF memo, as quoted in the Fox story:
In a companion memo dated June 15, 2010, field agents say they recovered “179 crime guns in Mexico…and 130” in the U.S., but roughly 1,300 were unaccounted for and “due to the proximity to the border, bank subpoenas and financial investigations have yielded little or no results.”

Patterico writes:
It was bad enough when it was merely alleged that ATF had allowed guns to be passed to cartel members. The idea that they were actually buying them and giving them to cartel members should be all over the front pages of every newspaper in the land.

Instead, it’s seven paragraphs down in a Fox News story.

  1. Hats off to Congressman Issa for his diligence in seeing this thing through to the end. Another example of the White House using the BATFE as a political tool. This should be a call for Holder’s resignation. Wouldn’t surprise me he decides to bail before the 2012 elections. Nice to see him fall on his sword.

  2. Meh. At least something is being attempted. If it was up to the industry and its lobby the NRA, we’d be selling MORE guns to the Mexican mob.

Sounds like that’s something “Right Wing Evangelical Gun Nut Practicing Optometry in San Diego Co. past 20+ years” (LOL) Dr. Gary Myers OD wouldn’t mind, either.

(Because all supporters of gun rights are Christofascist American Taliban, right? Wrong. I’m an atheist who believes in protecting the Second Amendment because if you weaken one of the Bill of Rights, you weaken them all. Try again, anonymous troll! But learn some facts first.

  3. Few things: First, I guess I’m glad you actually published my comment, although I’m not sure why Bradley J. Fikes felt the need to edit it instead of posting his own. That’s weird. Brad, you just had to insert yourself into that space, didn’t you?

Second, I was referencing “Right Wing Evangelical Gun Nut Practicing Optometry in San Diego Co. past 20+ years” because that’s how Dr. Gary Myers OD describes himself on his Twitter page, not because I was jumping to any conclusions about his love for guns and god. I thought it was funny, and so, probably does he.

Third, last I checked there are at least a few anonymous contributors to SD Rostra. (Big Daddy Liberator, if that’s your real name, let me know.) Should he be considered an anti-Christian nut too?

Anyway, looks like I struck a nerve. Call liberals predictable all you want, but when you talk about guns, it’s lots o’ fun. Incidentally, I am a gun owner, I just don’t harbor the irrational fear that Obama’s going to steal it from me.

    Later weenies.

Anonymous Troll: Reading comprehension alert: I didn’t edit your comment. I responded below your comment to your inaccuracies and stereotypes. People like you actually think all gun rights advocates are religious nuts, hence the irony of Dr. Myers statement.

Nice try, btw, likening all anonymous commenters to yourself.

As for your unverifiable claim to be a gun owner, I doubt that very much.

    Later, troll.

  4. I’m truly honored that you hand-picked my comments for personalized correction. I see now that creating your own comment below mine just wouldn’t have done it justice. You had to get in there and add your own footnotes.

What’s to doubt about my gun ownership? Can’t a person own a gun and not be irrationally afraid of government oppression?

I just happen to think that 2nd amendment nuts are as obnoxious as free-speech abusers like Fred Phelps, and I’d rather not be a part of [your] club.

  5. No one has to join any club to post here. But, for one so opposed to being part of whatever club it is (the vast right wing conspiracy, perhaps?), there sure is an obsession with following our actions on Twitter and commenting here. Wow, “weenies” … that really hurt our feelings. Your willingness to engage is appreciated, your comments above are much more worthwhile when you choose to debate like an adult.
