David Berry learned the value of community service in high school while teaching children how to swim as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and later as a volunteer coach with the Special Olympics in college.
“I can’t tell you what it felt like to teach a child confined to a wheelchair how to swim,” Berry said. “It’s something I’ll never forget.”
Berry is running for San Diego Superior Court Judge in the June 5 primary.
An attorney for 27 years, including 25 as a San Diego County Deputy District Attorney, Berry enjoys giving back to the community and sees it as his responsibility.
“To me, community service is about a person giving freely of his or her blessings of time, talent and treasure in order to have a positive impact on the community and others,” Berry said. “In return, that person gains meaningful relationships, an enhanced perspective of life and a sense of sharing their blessings.”
Berry is a board member of the Rancho Family YMCA, where he was part of the team that is developing a new YMCA along Interstate 15. Berry was a member of the team responsible for raising more than $200,000 annually in order to provide scholarships to children to attend YMCA camps and programs, assist with special needs children and provide after school programs for children.
He was a member of the Miramar Ranch North Planning Committee, the City of San Diego’s Miramar Ranch North Landscape Maintenance District Board and a Scripps Ranch Little League Coach.
As Chairperson of the Miramar Ranch North Landscape Maintenance District Board, Berry helped lead the conversion effort of potable water to reclaimed water used for landscape irrigation, resulting in the conservation of over 35 million gallons of potable water in Fiscal Year 2010.
Berry has received numerous awards for his community service, including the Congressional Recognition of Community Service award in 2011.
He and his wife of 19 years, Doris, have two children.
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Father Joe Carroll have endorsed Berry along with dozens of other community leaders and organizations.
Berry has prosecuted thousands of criminal cases. He has put murderers and other felons behind bars. He is the candidate with the extensive and real courtroom experience, having handled every type of criminal case, including murder, robbery, gang violence, sexual assault, carjacking and kidnapping.
His work is an extension of his beliefs.
“I’ve always believed in public service and that’s why I’m running to be a judge,” Berry said. “I want to continue to serve and protect our community.”

Berry scored a 9 on Craig Huey’s Judge Voter Guide. MIller scored and 8 and Kreep scored a 9 as well. We have chance to elect judges who take the Constitution seriously this term
