Hi Rostrafarians,
Do you miss the days of friendly, even cordial, political seasons in small town America? I contend they probably never existed.
Check out below what landed in my inbox with an admonition “DO NOT FORWARD!”
…and this is in bucolic and prosperous Encinitas where a recent citizen’s satisfaction survey says that an unbelievable 98 percent of the people love this city and think we’re on the right track with our amenities and our services. Now as they say “Ya’ can’t tell the players without a program,” so here’s who is referenced in the forwarded “do not forward” email:
“Tony” is Tony Kranz, candidate for Encinitas City Council
Lisa is Lisa Shaffer, candidate for Encinitas City Council
Teresa is Teresa Barth, incumbent and disgruntled member of the Encinitas City Council
Jim is Jim Kydd, publisher of the Coast News
Muir is appointed Encinitas City Council Member Mark Muir
Mayor Stocks is me.
“Sign gate” is referencing that some political signs were erected prior to the locally allowed 30 days, and that’s what seemingly passes for a major scandal in Encinitas politics these days… Cute, no? Channel 10 news actually interviewed me last night about it. Un-frickin-believable. Now, to the email:
Dear friends-
I am concerned this morning that we may have gone too far with our negative hit campaign on Mayor Stocks and Mark Muir, especially with the campaign signs. I’ve heard around town that people actually think the Council is doing a good job, which is probably related to that biased survey, which falsely indicated that people are happy with the city and its services. What a crock! Many of us are not happy that the park broke ground, but there is still time. Anyway, we need to start weighing the potential effects of their positive campaigning and our negative campaigning. This is still a small community and people may become wary regarding our intentions if the negative campaigning exceeds a certain threshold. We do not want to be written off as NIMBYS.
We have done as much damage as we can to Stocks and Muir with that campaign sign story. Maggie, Teresa, and Jim have really stepped up to get the media to favor our side, but I am now worried that Tony Kranz has spoiled that advantage for us. Why did he make that statement about not putting his signs up early and that someone must have stolen his signs from his garage? I hope none of us advised him to do that because what was once a great story has now turned into a bit of a joke and Tony now appears a little crazy, especially in the North County Times story. I know we are getting great play from the Coast News, but the dark side knows that Jim Kydd maxed out on our candidates’ campaign contributions, gave them an over-the-top endorsement in his paper, and gave them really great ad rates on the front page of the paper. With respect to the Coast News, I’ve also heard that columnist Andrew Audet may have become a liability for us. They appear to know about his FPPC violations when he was helping Tony and Teresa in 2010. Can’t Jim just have him disappear until the election is over? Ms. Tucker is doing a fine job for us and should be able to handle things for us until after the election. I don’t think they have any dirt on her.
My biggest concern continues to be Tony. I was driving by the Ford dealership yesterday afternoon and noticed that the oversized Stocks and Muir signs were gone and that Tony’s sign was there instead. That’s exactly what I mean about going too far. The large Stocks and Muir signs were also missing from several other locations where I saw them previously. I doubt they took them down because they really don’t seem that sorry for putting them up a day early. We need to be careful about how we are acting or we may lose favor with the media. The reason I say this is because it is well-known that the owner of the Ford dealership is very friendly with the Council majority and we would need permission to put our signs on that private property. The Council majority has their signs there during every election, with permission, I presume. This makes it look like we stole their signs, even if we did not. His parking lot is probably monitored 24 hours a day with video cameras like most dealerships, so I hope they did not catch something that may come back to bite us. If one of our people gets caught in the act things could turn against us quickly.
Finally, I’ve intercepted some chatter regarding Tony allegedly accusing a few specific people of stealing the signs out of his garage. It is being said that he is verbally assaulting and maliciously slandering the reputation of a few folks sympathetic to the business groups in town. Let’s hope the major papers do not print this information. This story, Tony’s garage story, and the story about him breaking that man’s campaign sign in 2010 do not show the best side of him. I fear that he has now become a liability for us and Teresa cannot be expected to hold his hand every step of the way. Tony is a great guy, but he may be a ticking time bomb. His is making some concerning mistakes now that make me wonder what might happen when placed under the pressure of being in office. It may be time to put all of our strength behind Lisa. She is the best bet to advance our agenda and ensure that there is no harm done to our community character, no hospital expansion, and no park anytime soon.
Thanks for listening everyone and please don’t shoot the messenger. Let’s help Teresa and advance our agenda by getting Lisa elected. We’ve got a better chance than ever.

Watch some fun video from 2010:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Nv0bMgayFg Same accuser, different targets…
Multiple sources tell me this guy, who stalked and took video of me while I put up campaign signs late at night last week is actually a convicted felon. I have no way to know if this is true or not. Maybe he just doesn’t like or react well to campaign season? And again, this is in Encinitas??? Wow…

Upon reflection, perhaps he is bitter because as a convicted felon he’s lost his right to vote… It’s possible…
Mr. Mayor,
Remember, the good old days had dentistry without Novocaine.
Worst fake e-mail ever. Who wrote that? Mike Andreen?
Seriously? I highly doubt this email is real. And if it were, and if Jerome really had the information regarding who originated it, it would be public by now. Why not?
This is a joke and a continued embarrasment on our mayor, his behavior, and the gullibility of our voters.
So, just so we’re straight, commenters… You are suggesting that Jerome Stocks actually took the time to fabricate an email, not in his writing style at all, just to get some play here with it? Yes, it is understood you don’t like him, but seriously? We would say that if you are calling him a liar, then maybe you should have the guts to attach your name to it.

Stocks is getting desperate – looks like he’ll have to get a real job soon.
TA ,over many years of personally witnessing and having experienced Stocks underhanded behavior in Encinitas, it would be no surprise if Stocks had one of his cronies author and supply the email . The email appears contrived and smells of vintage Stocks.
Also, is Corder a convicted felon? If so , Stocks should know that, because at the city council meeting Corder stated that it was Stocks that put him up to go after Barth. Stocks denied knowing Corder, yet Corder called Stocks a liar ,not once , not twice but three times about Stocks not knowing who he was. The content and events decribed by Corder again sound like vintage Stocks. ….
Convicted felons don’t lose their voting rights.
https://www.aclunc.org/vote/#felony
Elected officials should know better.
Although it seems Mayor Stocks was being sarcastic with his statement, the reality is it’s not that clear cut. Convicted felons, once released, often don’t have a right to vote, at least not until they are done with any parole. Court ordered supervision also means a loss of voting rights. The general rule is that parole (different than probation) must be completed for voting rights to be restored.
Well, multiple sources told me that you are a convicted felon. There is no way for me to verify this and I don’t know if it’s true, but like you, I’ll just share it with the public anyway.
It is implausible that you or anyone else would believe that Andreen’s fake email is legit.
And wow, what an amazing video. You did a good job at directing that attack. And don’t be concerned that folks would think bad of you attacking a deceased fellow councilwoman.
Do whatever you need to do to get elected.
All that’s explained in the ACLU link. I detected no sarcasm. And Mayor Stocks should be careful about publicly suggesting someone’s a felon. It’s pretty easy to verify whether that’s true. #notverymayoral
Mr Stocks referenced a ‘stalker’, linked a video and referenced a Channel 10 interview. See all below.

Hey jerome i moved. Up to city. Hall so all your buddys could see the sig ns. Come on by
Although we try to edit comments for grammar and spelling, we had no idea where to begin on the last one, so there it is — as posted.
Jerome you have me on that one. Next time I will check it before I send it. Question Jerome, why do you hide behind other names?
___
From Admin: Joe, we appreciate your comments. However, Jerome Stocks is a contributor to this site, not an administrator. The comment was from me, an admin. Thanks. -Greg Larkin
Jerome, what corner would you like me to hold up my signs tomorrow? Please let me know your favorite corner.
If that’s true, you would put my post up from last fri.
Joe, we do make mistakes with a volunteer blog. We are not seeing a comment from you from last Friday. Please post it again. Our apologies, if we missed it.
We generally allow all comments, as long as they use appropriate language, aren’t libelous, etc. But, with our spam system, sometimes comments slip thru the cracks, very occasionally.
What we also don’t allow is inane, off-the-topic attempts at trying to guess anonymous commenters, because that’s not fair to the anonymous person or the individual that such a guess may falsely claim as being the commenter. Get it?
Such as, Joe, your attempted comment that Jerome Stocks and commenter Chris above are one in the same. But, we’ll reference it, simply to point out that it’s pretty obvious Chris is not Stocks, if you actually read the former’s comments.
Jerome hides behind everything and every one. He’s not a man, the people from enc will speak on nov 6th. When they do, I will come down to city hall and open the door for you Jerome as you leave.
_
From ADMIN: We removed the inappropriate language. Final warning.
If that’s true what you just printed, then please tell me why when I sent in a note to Jerome yesterday around 115pm, Chris answered it as though he was speaking as Jerome.
___
From ADMIN: Dude, are you DAFT? The comment above from Chris yesterday at 1:28 p.m. may indeed have been after some note you wrote that we know nothing about, but his comment is directed AT Jerome. READ his comments! We’re done playing games with you.
Ok Jerome Stocks lovers. I just hung my sign up on the wall in front of me, I will read it first, before I write any more letters to sd rostra, My sign reads. BABY ON BOARD, So I will be nice to the mayor from now on
Jerome, if this guy represents your opposition, you’re looking better all the time!!!
To spin zone, no not representing the other side, I just want Jerome to come clean. I have nothing against you our anybody that supports him. Thanks
I am very confident that the poster, “joe corder”, is as fake a poster as is the fake email. Andreen again?
You guys are confusing as hell.
Joe Corder says Chris Thomas is Jerome, which he’s not.
Chris Thomas says Joe Corder is fake, yet Chris himself posted a link above to the Leucadia Blog with a video of Joe speaking at a City Council meeting.
Would you two like to be introduced?
Chris, would you like me to call you asap and id myself? Give me a number. Joe Corder
Chris says I’m Andreen. I stand on my own feet, I have no problems with anybody. Just wanted to be clear who I am, please remember one thing, this is about me and the mayor. I just want him to tell the truth about the 2010 video. I have no beefs with any supporters. Thanks. -Joe Corder
I have no idea whether the “joe corder” here is the actual Joe Corder who recorded the video or someone goofing on him. But that’s kinda irrelevant.
Back to the original point: that letter is so contrived and unbelievable that I can’t believe Thor’s Assistant took it seriously. Any actual supporter of Tony and Lisa would have to be insane to write something like that. It reads much more like the wishful thinking of Stocks’ toady, Mike Andreen.
So man up, Jerome. Why are you hiding the alleged author of that e-mail? Because you know it is FAKE and if you named the supposed author he would expose it as a fake.
Jerome Stocks : “Do you miss the days of friendly, even cordial, political seasons in small town America? I contend they probably never existed.” Yes, and he’s one of the main reasons why, in Encinitas.
Who is “OnlyTruth4U,” author of this stupid opinion piece Stocks talks about? This person is either spineless or working for Stocks and Muir. It smells like a disguised hit piece on Tony Kranz. Who is this “us” they keep referring to? If you are one of “us”, have the guts to put your name to your opinions. If this writer is a man, he has no balls. If a woman, she has no “balls.”
You have no idea how far the opposition will go to win. Check out some of the comments from “Kydd is Clueless” in the Coast News blog on this story:
http://thecoastnews.com/2012/10/stocks-and-muir-post-signs-early/comment-page-2/#comments
says:

I agree with most of Lynn’s comments. Tony, who has run for 2 offices in the past and Shaffer, the ethics expert should have known better than to put their signs out a full week ahead. In a race the first runner to false start often triggers the others to do so.”
“Kydd is Clueless says:

Aren’t you afraid that Tony may physically assault the first person in the Council chambers that disagrees with him and then claim that he was entrapped? You just can’t behave that way. That’s not the way it works in the real world, but maybe it his universe.”
Kydd is Clueless, who many think is Mike Andreen (Encinitas version of Karl Rove), like OnlyTruth4U, uses innuendos and allegations, playing fast and loose with “facts” while conveniently remaining anonymous. They are clearly attempting damage control for Stocks and Muir after they were caught red-handed breaking the rules.
OnlyTruth4U’s comments likewise are full of unproven assumptions. Signs have apparently disappeared and they assume Tony is behind it. “I’ve heard around town…” “I’ve also heard that…” “I’ve intercepted some chatter…” Interesting that OnlyTruth4U and Kydd is Clueless use the same methods (assumption, innuendo, and “facts”) to put down Tony Kranz. Could they be the same writer, using a “Good cop-Bad cop” approach? We don’t know, because they are fictitious writers, but either way this looks like just another way to sway opinion.
“OnlyTruth” would have us sit down, shut up, and behave ourselves lest we make a bad impression, while the Council majority, Andreen, and their cronies run roughshod over our community with no sense of manners or shame. And the idea of backing only Lisa Schaffer when there are THREE seats open on the Council would be stupid, giving up without even trying.
There is merit in being concerned about the opinions of the majority of people who don’t follow Encinitas politics and can be easily led astray, and those news outlets who are biased against us. But the answer is NOT in behaving ourselves. If bad behavior were that toxic, the present Council majority would not have a prayer of winning.
The answer is in getting the truth out. Contact Lisa Shaffer and Tony Kranz’s campaigns and ask what you can do to help them. Talk to your friends and neighbors about this election. Taking the message door to door is very important. I asked two-term Mayor and 20 year Councilman of Escondido Jerry Harmon if precinct walking was important, and he said that when you don’t have a lot of money from out of town developers for mailers and media like your opposition does, taking the message door to door is crucial. So don’t back off but GET ACTIVE!
