Carol Kim did not vote for pension reform four years ago
SAN DIEGO (October 2, 2014)—Chris Cate, a candidate for San Diego City Council District 6, is calling on his opponent Carol Kim to confirm whether she supports two voter-approved reforms: Comprehensive Pension Reform and Managed Competition. Both reforms passed overwhelming with more 60% of the vote, and each has proven effective at saving tax dollars.
Four years ago, when pension reform was on the ballot, Kim didn’t vote
Cate, a taxpayer advocate at a local non-profit, helped lead the Pension Reform effort and campaigned for the changes voters overwhelmingly supported. Cate also has scrutinized numerous City Hall budgets, identifying waste that has been eliminated and helping to save taxpayers throughout the region more than $1 billion.
“Carol has shown a lack of leadership on two issues that are important to voters,” Cate said. “With pension reform and managed competition, we have a real opportunity to start saving tax dollars and investing those savings back into our roads, our parks, our libraries, and other neighborhoods services.”
Cate also questions whether Kim understands the fact that the Mayor and majority of City Council will need to continue to support pension reform and managed competition if voters are going to see the savings they’ve said they want from City Hall.
When asked about her support of these reforms at a recent debate, Kim stated: “Both Pension Reform and Managed Competition are the law of the land…it’s how we do business here in San Diego.”
This isn’t the first time Kim’s lack of experience has surfaced. She’s used her official ballot statement and campaign flyers to make promises to voters she could never keep if elected to the City Council.
“Carol is either naive, or she’s intentionally trying to mislead voters,” Cate said. “I’ll work for San Diegans to ensure the reforms voters overwhelmingly supported will continue to be implemented.”

The unions funding Kim’s campaign (with FAR more money that Cate and allies will be able to raise) make it clear that she doesn’t HAVE to understand the issues. For the bosses, her ignorance is an ADVANTAGE, not a disadvantage.
Rest assured, these bosses will be at every city council meeting (on the taxpayers dime!), letting Kim and the other union-funded Democrats know how to vote on each and every fiscal issue. And believe me, these bosses have thoroughly reviewed the measures and know which way to vote. Kim need only push the buttons.
These are two great issues for Chris Cate to emphasize. As Richard Rider points out, no way does Carol Kim support pension reform. But it is certainly popular with voters.
