  1. If Todd Gloria does, in fact, not get re-elected as City Council President, the vote will have nothing to do with who would make a better City Council President and everything to do with the Republicans on the Council trying to stop a Democrat from attaining higher office after his term has expired.

    Two comments:

    1. If Chris Cate really cares about what is best for the City and not rank partisanship, as he repeatedly said during the campaign, he will vote for Gloria.

    2. If the Republicans believe that removing Todd Gloria from the President’s chair will derail his future prospects, they will find that their actions will backfire and that Mr. Gloria will probably be an even stronger candidate for whatever office he seeks in 2016.

  2. Now that the City Council President vote is official, I challenge Chris Cate to explain why he thinks that Sherri Lightner will be a better City Council President than Todd Gloria.

Of course, I don’t seriously expect a response.

  3. Brian,

I haven’t met a politician yet who was willing to pass up a promotion. Mrs. Lightner’s motivation is very transparent and also not nearly as interesting to me as Mr. Cate’s. Does he think Sherri Lightner would make a better Council President than Todd Gloria, and if so, why, or was he just being a partisan hack?

  4. Only 1 Democrat voted for Gloria, congratulations to Sherri Lightner!
Gloria tried to screw us by passing the Linkage fee increase & Minimum Wage increase. Karma & Bipartisanship.

  5. Be warned of empowering a moderate Democrat who can get support from our side. Proof: Lightner’s predecessor Scott Peters.

  6. Hector,

All the Democrats, except Lightner, voted for Gloria. When that vote failed 5-4, Emerald and Cole voted for Lightner since she was going to win anyway.

As for the linkage fee and minimum wage votes, Lightner voted the same as Gloria so tell me again why she would make a better Council President. Or more to the point, I would prefer Cate to tell me why HE thinks she would be a better Council President.

  8. HQ, the Republicans felt that their agenda items would more easily make it to a general vote under Lightner’s leadership than Gloria’s. And from what I am reading from pro-Gloria commenters, the Republicans are right.
Judging from the Democratic Party rhetoric over the last few years, should we all be happy that they got rid of an obstructionist partisan and instead implemented someone who will work across the aisles and is backed by Republicans and Democrats?

  9. T.A.,

I have not and your point is well taken. I will ask him directly.

    Michael,

Are you referring to Todd Gloria as an “obstructionist partisan?” If so, you really haven’t been paying attention.

  10. Hypocrisy: I think Todd calling a sudden meeting to vote on the Minimum Wage when he knew several of the Republican City Councilpeople would be out of town, alienated the Republican City Council members. The City Council was in official recess. If you think this was a fair and evenhanded way to running the City Council, then you really haven’t been paying attention.

  11. I actually can’t name anyone I would call an obstructionist partisan. I am using the words as they’ve been defined by the Democrats over the last few years.
I truly figured the Democrats would be cheering in the streets over this move. They keep talking about how the parties have to work together.
Well…unless they are in power. Then the message turns into “elections have consequences”.

  12. I will leave it this:

    1. Lightner hasn’t voted differently from Gloria on any issue of importance to the Republican Party (Barrio Logan, Minimum Wage, Big Box, Linkage Fees, etc)

    2. Gloria was universally lauded by Democrats AND Republicans for his work as Council President and Interim Mayor.

    3. This episode will probably improve Gloria’s chances for future office because of the way he handled it, especially in delaying the vote until Chris Cate was seated.
