After just last month filing the necessary documents to set up a committee and declaring his intention as a candidate against Fifth District County Supervisor Bill Horn next year, Planning Commissioner Peder Norby recently had a change of heart.
Norby’s consultant Bob Schuman confirmed his client would not run. “He’s got a great life, job and marriage,” said Schuman. “He asked himself why he’d want to risk messing any of that up.” Schuman also said Norby was happy knowing he would continue to be involved while influencing public policy, “doing what he is doing.”
New Third District Supervisor Dave Roberts recently re-appointing Norby to the County Planning Commission, keeping the appointment first made by former Supervisor Pam Slater-Price (see Roberts’ tweet below). Norby is the Hwy 101 Corridor Coordinator for the City of Encinitas and has worked in the city for 16 years.
With Norby out, other potential candidates against Horn include Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood and San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond. See Erica Holloway’s take from March.
Statement from Norby…
For months, I have been contemplating entering the race for District 5 Supervisor. I am fortunate to have a supportive and understanding family. My wife and children, my parents who are both healthy and active, seven brothers and sisters, over 20 nieces and nephews and one great niece.
With much thought and deep soul searching, I have decided that I will not enter the race for the 5th District County Supervisor. I will continue to serve as a County Planning Commissioner, appointed by and in close cooperation with a great man and public servant, Supervisor Dave Roberts.
Selfishly, I want to spend as much time with my wife, children, my parents and family as possible. I am reminded of this every evening and weekend I spend away for home.
The recent months have also highlighted some known personal traits for better or worse. It is an understatement to say I can become obsessive in areas of interest and removed in areas that are not of interest. I am at my best when I am chasing a passionate pursuit in my field of interests. Chiefly, land use, community development, restoration, preservation, renewable energy and transportation technology. My current positions, allow me to focus on my passions.
Thank you to all who serve and have served our cities and county as elected officials. Your service is among the toughest, thankless and most important jobs, with much sacrifice. I encourage proven civic leaders to run for District 5 County Supervisor as our County is best served when well qualified citizens who are able, step forward engaging in healthy debate in the issues of the day, providing choice to the voters. I thank District 5 County Supervisor Bill Horn for his service to our county the past 19 years.
