Taxpayers to Chargers: You’re again invited, but you need to respond

Below is a letter from San Diego County Taxpayers Association President & CEO Haney Hong sent to to Dean Spanos, President of the San Diego Chargers, regarding the measure on the November ballot asking San Diego voters to increase the hotel tax to help pay for a downtown stadium and convention center annex.

Mr. Dean Spanos
Chairman of the Board and President
San Diego Chargers
4020 Murphy Canyon Road
San Diego, CA 92123

2 August 2016

Dear Mr. Spanos:

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association (SDCTA), I invite you or a representative to meet with the Association on Friday, 19 August 2016, at approximately 12:30 p.m. and present your thoughts on the “San Diego Integrated Convention Center Expansion/ Stadium and Tourism Initiative.”

I have reached out several times over the past five months to your associates over email and telephone to bring the Chargers’ perspective into the Association’s multiple meetings. I write to reiterate that this invitation remains open. I hope you will accept our invitation and join our discussion.

I also understand that in the various presentations you and your associates have made to other community groups that you cite a study, commissioned by the team, to estimate the economic impact of the proposed non-contiguous convention center annex and stadium facility. Specifically, I understand that this study estimates, among many figures, that the proposed facility will result in an additional 1.85 million hotel room nights over the next ten years. Because the Association has a seventy-one year history dedicated to promoting efficient and cost effective government and advocating for good usage of taxpayer dollars in San Diego, I request that the Chargers make this study available to the Association and the public for review and assistance in our analysis.

You or your associates should feel free to contact me personally at (619) 234-6423, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,

Haney Hong
President and CEO
