Encinitas: Silly Season Mail call

As a Smiling Spotlight I get plenty of campaign mail, as we all do this time of year. My informants tell me that retiring Councilman/Mayor/Elder Statesman James Bond of Encinitas coined the phrase, “the silly season” which it is, and he nailed it with that moniker.

Mr. Bond also served as Board Chair of the San Diego County Water Authority, an honor never before bestowed upon a representative from the San Dieguito Water District whose Board consists of Encinitas City Council Members.

Today I’m looking at mailers I received from Jerome Stocks, city councilman and current Encinitas mayor, as well as a mail piece from Lisa Shaffer, a candidate for City Council.

Ms. Shaffer goes to great lengths to explain in her piece that Encinitas deserves council members who “are not afraid of honest discussion”… and will operate with integrity and respect (I presume she means respect for the public, but it doesn’t specify). And good for her, after all who could oppose such views?

And she claims that it doesn’t matter if you’re part of the 1 percent, the 2 percent, the 98 percent or whatever, you deserve honest “responsive” government. Great platitudes all.  Wow, I’m getting misty just thinking about it…

Lacking such platitudes, Jerome Stocks’ piece says simply why the City of Encinitas is in great shape, what his philosophy is and has been in guiding his decision making, and then actually says, “If you have any questions, please feel free to call me directly at 760-635-0425”.

Lisa Shaffer lists no phone number and the address listed appears to be a mail drop on El Camino Real in Encinitas.

So… Who exactly is the responsive, honest, transparent candidate willing to discuss issues with constituents?

Just asking…
