Save a San Diego Surfer…Eat Shark Fin Soup!

God blessed them, saying to them: “Be fertile and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the living things that move on earth. Genesis 1:28

Yesterday, while Mission Beach closed due to a great white shark sighting, a California State senate committee passed a bill that would ban the sale, trade and possession of shark fins in the state.  Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) has called it “an unfair attack on Asian culture and cuisine.” Apparently Mr. Yee doesn’t read much about his own city. San Francisco recently tried to put forth a ballot measure that would ban the Jewish millennia old tradition of circumcision of babies. Why would control-freaks of the same ilk then turn around and suddenly exercise restraint and cultural sensitivity with regard to a centuries old Chinese soup recipe? Mr. Yee may have the shark fin soup recipe down, but the recipe for logic he does not.

At least the solution to re-opening Mission Beach is obvious: Let fishermen go wild on the sharks and thus let the surfers surf in peace. Marco Gonzalez continually makes a big stink about San Diego fireworks shows allegedly endangering sea life.   For the sake of all those who revel in the ocean, if only this were actually true….

Thanks to a last minute reprieve, the 4th of July fireworks show in La Jolla still happened last month.  If the fireworks were as catastrophic to marine life as Gonzalez imagined, then perhaps a large section of Mission Beach would not have been closed down yesterday due to a great white shark sighting.

Let the fishermen do the job fireworks won’t do–subdue the sharks of the sea. According to Yelp, there are a few restaurants on Convoy that sell this controversial delicacy. Get there.  Save a San Diego surfer, eat shark fin soup!
