……. Some 5th District History
District 5 has a memorable history, including Libertarian Republican Fred Schnaubelt, who toppled 12-year Democratic incumbent Floyd Morrow in 1977; Marine combat veteran Ed Struiksma (1981-1989), who saw to it that Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch got the pubic services needed by new neighborhoods.
And Tom Behr (1991-93) who took office after a Recall election, and helped reverse a gerrymandering Council re-map plan (sound at all familiar?). Carl DeMaio (2009-present) is leaving the District 5 post to run for SD Mayor next year.
Kersey, a graduate of UCLA and Northwestern, put the $75,000 together in 24 days, from his announcement statement on June 6th. Donations from others topped $33,000, and the candidate then matched those contributions, per Stephen Puetz. Kersey jump-started the race with a $15,000 personal loan. The City Clerk’s office lists Richard Carlson as another candidate in Dist. 5.
In his spare time Mark Kersey enjoys “golf, coaching tee ball and taking his 5-year old son Tyler to Padres and Chargers games”.
Stephen Puetz won renown a few years ago when a reporter asked him what it is like to run election campaigns for a living. “It’s the Puetz” was his deadpan response.
