Back in July, Assemblyman Rocky Chávez broke his 2012 promise to not raise taxes by supporting cap and trade. The Central Committee of the Republican Party of San Diego County voted to not endorse his 2018 re-election campaign in their August meeting. At that same meeting, the Committee voted to endorse Assemblyman Brian Maienschein’s 2018 re-election campaign.
Last month, Assemblyman Brian Maienschein broke his 2012 promise to not raise taxes by supporting State Senator Toni Atkins’ mortgage tax (he was the only Republican do so, giving Democrat Sabrina Cervantes cover to vote against it). This is what the Democrat, Cervantes said:
“However, I voted against Senate Bill 2 because it contains a regressive tax that disproportionately affects California’s middle-class. I was sent to Sacramento to fight for the taxpayers of Western Riverside County, and that is what I intend to continue doing.”
An endorsed Republican not only voted to impose a new tax on Californians but did so after he signed a pledge to not do that. The Democrat voted against it calling ot a “regressive tax”
This puts the Central Committee of the Republican Party of San Diego County in a bit of a pickle. Tomorrow night, it can:
1- Vote to rescind Maeinschein’s re-election endorsement.
2- Not address the Maienshein issue but vote to endorse Chávez for re-election.
3- Do nothing.
If they do nothing, and I were Assemblyman Chávez , I would wonder why I was being singled out.
I vote for the first option. tax hikers and pledge breakers should not be rewarded for their bad behavior.
