Report Card on the Media Features Familiar Rostra Names Feb 25

The San Diego Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) announced its lineup for the annual “Report Card on the Media” program on Thursday, February 25.  This is a popular event in which some of the year’s biggest newsmakers turn the tables and grade the media on – and give a little payback for – the coverage of their stories.  Previous participants include La Mesa Mayor Art Madrid; and Lisa Sanders, daughter of Mayor Jerry Sanders and an advocate for same-sex marriage.

Among the confirmed panelists are Marti Emerald, the former 10News reporter-turned-City Council member who has learned what it’s like to be the story; and Betty Rexford, the Poway City Council member who may face a recall election in June. Also appearing is Joseph Rocha, the 23-year-old Navy veteran who made headlines locally and nationally when he spoke out against hazing and the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. SPJ says more newsmakers will be added to the Payback Panel.

With Emerald and Rexford on the panel, it’s hard to imagine many other participants getting a word in edgewise! Panelists also take questions from the audience as well.

The program begins with a reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the program at 7 p.m. It takes place at Point Loma Nazarene University’s Fermanian Business Center, 3900 Lomaland Drive.  There is no charge and the public is welcome to attend.  A $10 donation is suggested.  Please RSVP to spjsandiego@gmail.com
