Political rhetoric has always been biting but has escalated to vilification since Trump was elected. Traditionally a tool of left-wing commenters, an anonyous commenter, with inside knowledge about a Republican candidate’s Congressional campagn, referred to me and another Pro-Life volunteer as “fringe misfits”, on this blog. I, of course, embrace that moniker. I can laugh at myself and stereotypes of political conservatives.
Hollywood has elevated satirical rhetoric to an art form and I wonder how well that will be received. Universal Studios is releasing a movie called “The Hunt” on September 27, 2019. Billed as satire, the plot is built around a bunch of wealthy, liberal elitists, travelling to a “resort” where they get to hunt a bunch of kidnapped conservatives for sport:
The violent, R-rated film from producer Jason Blum’s Blumhouse follows a dozen MAGA types who wake up in a clearing and realize they are being stalked for sport by elite liberals.
Some of the movie quotes are sure to be applauded at film festivals in tony mountain towns:
“Did anyone see what our ratf**ker-in-chief just did?” one character asks early in the screenplay for The Hunt, a Universal Pictures thriller set to open Sept. 27. Another responds: “At least The Hunt’s coming up”
“War is war,” says one character after shoving a stiletto heel through the eye of a denim-clad hillbilly.
You have to wonder how it will be received at the box office though:
From a business perspective, The Hunt presents a gamble for Universal in these divided times. The satire Assassination Nation, which also pitted the woke versus the unwoke in uber-violent fashion, represented the top sale at Sundance 2018 at $10 million. But the film fizzled upon its release later that year, earning just $2 million with no international rollout. Says one person involved with that film, “We thought people would get the joke.”
It’s a low-budget film ($18 million) so it may just be a pet project of some wealthy liberals. A few million bucks may be a small price to pay to watch a movie about rich-elitists slaughtering a bunch of “fringe misfits” but you have to wonder if the masses will line up at the movie theaters to fork over their hard-earned money.
My prediction? It wins tons of awards and doesn’t get past the first weekend at the box office. Watch the trailer for the movie here.
