OCEANSIDE: Big money flowing in on both sides of recall campaign

Kern gets major donations from businesses; unions pour more cash into fighting him

Big bucks are flowing almost daily to underwrite campaigns for and against the recall of Oceanside City Councilman Jerry Kern with less than a week to go before the Dec. 8 election.

Fighting for his political survival, Kern in the last month raised more than $71,000, including a $20,000 contribution Nov. 24 from the North County Association of Realtors through the California Real Estate Political Action Committee in Los Angeles, according to reports filed with the city clerk this week.

So far, Kern has raised more than $154,000.

A separate group that has joined Kern in battling the recall, Citizens Against the Recall Effort, has raised nearly $19,900, including a $2,500 donation from the California Teamsters Public Affairs Council of Sacramento. The Teamsters represent city blue collar workers, said city Human Resources Director Brian Kammerer.

Those out to recall Kern have collected $176,457 so far, according to reports filed with the city clerk.

  1. Let’s randomly pick a local officeholder who is also a union member, and target him or her for recall, just for “fair play.”
