International children’s advocate and former national Teacher of the Year Sandra McBrayer today endorsed Bonnie Dumanis for Mayor of San Diego. McBrayer founded the Monarch School in San Diego, the first successful school in the U.S. for homeless youth, and is currently the Chief Executive Officer of a San Diego-based child advocacy organization. President Bill Clinton named McBrayer the 1994 Teacher of the Year, and she was also the 1993 California and San Diego County Teacher of the Year. She currently Chairs the California State Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
“I’ve known Bonnie Dumanis for many years– she is committed to protecting the rights of children and promoting a quality education for all our kids,” said McBrayer. “In her role as District Attorney, Bonnie has been committed to protecting children from sexual predators, keeping kids in school through truancy programs and supporting child victims,” said McBrayer. “As Mayor, I know she will continue to make schools and education a priority and she has the proven leadership and ability to bring real change.”
McBrayer’s leadership of a local child advocacy group includes working with community leaders, organization and government agencies to develop, enhance and strengthen policy, programs and projects which serve children and youth. McBrayer has also served as an adjunct professor in the College of Education at San Diego State University where she introduced new and first-year teachers to the multicultural, socio-political and economic dynamics of education.
McBrayer was appointed by the Governor to chair the State Advisory for Before and After School Programs, appointed by the Chief Justice of California to serve on the Judicial Council Access and Fairness Advisory Committee, and serves on numerous boards including San Diego Commission on Children, Youth and Families San Diego Workforce Investment Board and Project Safe Neighborhood.
