Taxpayer advocate Chris Cate, running for the open Sixth District city council seat in the City of San Diego, received the party’s early support, a clear statement from the GOP that its members appreciate his high-profile leadership in recent years on a number of issues. Cate is the vice president of the San Diego County Taxpayers Association. Other possible candidates, including former San Diego Unified School District Trustee (and former Republican) Mitz Lee, have announced for or are eying the race. The party’s endorsement of Cate sends a significant message at this stage, one year before the primary election.
Sixth District Councilmember Lorie Zapf, also endorsed, is running next year in the Second District, currently held by Councilmember Kevin Faulconer, who will be term-limited from office. The city’s most recent redistricting placed Zapf’s home in the boundaries of the Second District.
Both the Cate and Zapf endorsements were unanimous votes of the party members.

SAN DIEGO — In preparation for the 2014 elections, on Monday night the Republican Party of San Diego County endorsed incumbent Congressional, State Senate and Assembly members, County and Local officials, along with candidates in key seats.

Chairman Tony Krvaric stated “With Democratic scandals on the federal level, out of control spending on the state level, and a destructive Mayor Filner on a local level, Republicans are offering a return to original American principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, delivering the core services of government, and a focus on small business and entrepreneurship to restore an economy for all to participate in.”
“We are proud of our 2014 team and encourage all San Diegans to take a fresh look at our candidates,” Krvaric concluded.
