Hot Takes on Election 2026

Just a few general observations at the top:

Trump’s preference for the put down and the “weave” has worked for him to this point.  His ascent coincided with technologically-driven changes in the nature of political communications (such as micro-targeted social media feeds and the meme-ification of politics) that lent themselves to Trump’s simultaneously crude and, shall we say, breezy approach to political rhetoric.  Maybe I’m a dinosaur, but back in my day a serious campaign would have 2-3 succinct talking points paired with a semi-legitimate supporting factoid for each set to repeat until critical mass (and then some) was achieved.  There was just no—ZERO—counterpoint from the president, not matter how pat, to all the “man in the street” plaints about choosing between food and gas.

Now, the good news, bad news:

That said, Reagan Republicans and other free-market types have got to come up with a response on the affordability/AI/Data Center issue.  The good news is that Democrats are completely unserious on these issues, particularly reducing what used to be called the “cost of living.”  When Democrats talk about “affordability” they mean only one thing—price controls, which (followed by the necessary subsidies) inevitably create market distortions that ultimately leave consumers (i.e., voters) unsatisfied.
