District 1: County Board of Supervisor Special Election Update
There are still votes to be counted, but Chula Vista Mayor John McCann has conceded. Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre is the newest Supervisor on the County Board.
Important points:
- Both McCann and Aguirre are very anti-gun. Neither candidate was better for us. In fact, if you look at their voting record and public statements, on almost every social, civil rights, and economic issue they were the same.
- San Diego County Gun Owners did not endorse in this race and that was absolutely the right thing to do. Neither of these candidates are any good for us and NOT voting for either is the principled, ethical, and right thing to do.
- Having no good option was not the fault of the Republican Party nor were they wrong for supporting McCann. They held their nose and supported their candidate and that is what they are designed to do. Yes, McCann is horrible and anti-gun, but it is not the duty nor the responsibility of the Republican Party to enforce adherence to issues. The Republican Party promotes the candidate the voters give them, and, in this case, they were given lyin’ John McCann.
- SDCGO could have gotten McCann over the finish line. McCann trails by 4,600 votes. There will be a lot more votes counted, but that gap will likely stay around that amount. Make no mistake, had we backed McCann, SDCGO could have produced at least 4,600 votes for him. No question. McCann’s decisions and behavior prevented us from supporting him. I sincerely hope this ends his political career because John McCann is someone that should never be anywhere near power.
- SDCGO is not yet in a position to win every election in every district, but we are absolutely able to keep an anti-gun Republican from getting elected in almost every district. We will continue to be a pro-Second Amendment candidate’s best friend and an anti-gun candidate’s worst enemy.
Thank you,
Michael A. Schwartz
