“I can write better than anybody who can write faster, and I can write faster than anybody who can write better.”
– A. J. Liebling (1904-1963)
I’m counting on these words to guide me in my role as one of your bloggers here on SDRostra.
While people seem to assume I’m a conservative, I am in fact a Libertarian through and through. Libertarians are NOT conservatives in all matters and my goal is to illuminate and explore the differences. And perhaps convert a few of you in thought if not in party registration.
By way of background, like many Libertarians I am a small business owner. I have a public relations consulting firm, the Falcon Valley Group. I am also a former broadcast producer and host in San Diego (KSDO, KFMB TV, KPBS) and still get my kicks in front of an open mike as guest host on “The Rick Amato Show” Thursday nights from 9 – 11 p.m on KCBQ AM 1170.
Our great nation was founded not on democratic principles, but LIBERTARIAN principles of individual freedom (and the responsibilities that go with those freedoms), the free market, private property, and government only to the extent it is needed to keep order. Our Constitution reflects the notion that individuals have both God-given and natural rights to live as they choose as long as their conduct doesn’t infringe on the same rights of others and that government exists to preserve those rights, not hinder them.
When I talk to people about libertarian thought, people realize they are much more libertarian than they imagine. That’s my job here! We’ll mull over current topics like health care, taxation, Social Security, Second Amendment rights, drug laws, education, and look at the many ways our freedoms and well-being are negatively affected by the government We The People are supposed to control every day.
Let’s take the discussion seriously, but never ourselves. Good people can disagree without being disagreeable. I welcome it and look forward to it!
