DeMaio Urges Yes on Prop C — For Veterans

DeMaio Urges YES on Prop C

Measure Will Honor Our Local Veterans By Fixing Flaw In City Charter

SAN DIEGO – San Diego Councilmember Carl DeMaio urged voters in the City of San Diego to vote Yes on Proposition C – Limitations and Credits for Veterans Preferences Points.

“San Diego is quintessentially a military town – and we are proud of the men and women working locally in support of our armed forces.  It is only fitting that the City of San Diego have a modern veterans preference program that honors the service of our veterans by providing them with preference in city hiring processes,” commented DeMaio.

The City of San Diego has long had a veterans preference program outlined in its City Charter.  Unfortunately, language in the City Charter dated back to a time when conscription – or the Draft – was the criteria for a veteran to receive a preference of an additional point on a job applicants Civil Service exam.  The Draft was eliminated more than 40 years ago, rendering the current city veterans preference program outdated and obsolete.

By not approving Proposition C, thousands of local veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan will fail to qualify for the veterans preference.  Proposition C modifies the City Charter to restore veterans preferences by eliminating reference to the Draft.

“Let’s honor the service of our veterans by voting YES on Proposition C,” DeMaio concluded.
