Councilmember Carl DeMaio recently wrote an open letter to the President of the Salary Setting Commission in reaction to their recommendation to raise the Mayor and City Councilmembers salaries.
In his letter DeMaio stated that he “simply could not agree that a salary increase for the Mayor and City Council is warranted. I would suggest that the dire ramifications of the city’s current struggle with unsustainable labor costs take precedent over the issues the Commission raises.
DeMaio also noted that details of the generous pension benefits offered to elected officials were noticeably absent from the report. DeMaio attached a breakdown of the standard compensation package for City Councilmembers in the letter which accounts for salary and all fringe benefits which are as follows.
City Council Compensation
Base Salary: $75,396
Pension Cost: $38,190
Other Benefits: $22,326
Total : $135,912
As shown above the total compensation for an elected City Councilmember is $135,912.
Demaio concluded by asking the Salary Setting Commission to specifically account for the generous and costly pension plan for elected officials in future analyses before recommending increases in compensation.
