Groups Cite Taxpayer Savings and Pension Reform in Endorsing Competition Ballot Measure
Measure Wins Endorsement of 2 Statewide Taxpayer Groups
SAN DIEGO – The campaign to pass the San Diego “Competition and Transparency in City Contracting” Initiative today announced the endorsement of two important statewide taxpayer advocacy groups: The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association and the Californians for Fiscal Responsibility.
The two taxpayer groups not only cite savings to taxpayers from competitive bidding, but also tout the benefits of the ballot measure to advancing pension reform in city government. The City of San Diego faces a $2 billion shortfall in its troubled pension system.
“By requiring competitive bidding in each city department, this ballot measure will save taxpayers millions each year and enable the city to restore some of the services it has lost over the years,” commented Jon Coupal, President of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.
“This ballot measure will help advance pension reform by requiring that the cost of city employee pensions be included in the competitive bidding process,” noted Marcia Fritz, President of Californians for Fiscal Responsibility.
“In order to be competitive in the bidding process, city employees will have to reform their pensions to levels comparable with the private sector, and that will help save taxpayers money,” concluded Fritz.
“We are thrilled to have the support of these two well-respected statewide taxpayer advocacy organizations,” commented San Diego City Councilmember Carl DeMaio.
