Citizens Redistricting Commission

Dear Community Leader:

As you know, the California Redistricting Citizen Commission established by Proposition 11 is well under way.  The Commission will begin holding Public Hearings over the next 45 days in our area.  Below you will find a link to the complete schedule of upcoming hearings and locations across California.  The San Diego Hearings are scheduled for May 13th in San Marcos at CSUSM from 6:00 – 9:00; May 14th at San Diego Community College from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Currently it is listed as “CRC provides regional wrap-up” on the calendar and does not list a location.

It is important that we participate in this process.  It is up to all of us to ensure fair redistricting by this Commission and prevent biased or gerrymandered districts.

The Commission has already been subject to criticisms for partisan and non-transparent hiring practices.  It’s up to all of us to monitor the Commission and demand that this process results in fair districts.

As a respected leader in your community, you are encouraged to engage in this process and to recruit others to testify before the Commission and hold them accountable in the public eye.

When you testify to the commission, please consider the following issues:

  1. Review the current district maps for Congressional and State Senate and State Assembly districts in your county. http://swdb.berkeley.edu/maps.html
  2. Identify whether and how these districts have odd shapes, are elongated or have “bridges” that connect otherwise disconnected populations.   This means the districts aren’t “contiguous” and compact.
  3. Identify whether and how these districts divide cities, cross county boundaries unnecessarily and divide “communities” that have common interests considering Proposition 20’s definition.

Again, the Citizens Redistricting Commission is coming to a town near you.  Here is the link to the complete list of Public Hearings for your calendar,

Thank you for your commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent redistricting process here in California.
